Day one at AVCA Beach Championship yields wins over Eckerd, Erskine

Javelinas start 2-0 in pool play with one match remaining

TAVARES, Fla. – On day one of the American Volleyball Coaches Association Small College Beach Championships, the Texas A&M-Kingsville beach volleyball team collected two wins in Pool D, first topping the Eckerd Tritons, 4-1, then knocking off the Erskine Flying Fleet, 4-1, on Thursday afternoon at the Hickory Point Beach Sand Volleyball Complex in Tavares, Fla.

The Javelinas are now 17-10 for the season.

TAMUK vs. Eckerd

The Tritons only fielded three pairs, which means the Javelinas started the match with a 2-0 edge thanks to forfeits in the fourth and fifth flights. The Javelinas' triumph was clinched by seniors Olivia Nicholson (North Platte, Neb.) and Roxanne Morris (Goliad, Texas) who dominated in the No. 3 match, 21-8, 21-9. The Javs' final point was produced via a three-set battle at No. 2, which was won by junior Lexi Ahrens (Virginia, Minn.) and sophomore Adrienne van Brunt (Corpus Christi, Texas), 21-14, 17-21, 15-10.

TAMUK vs. Erskine

In a contest in which all five matches were decided in straight sets, the first point went to the Blue and Gold, courtesy of sophomore Rylie Anderson (Justin, Texas) and freshman Madelyn Wallace (La Vernia, Texas) at No. 4, 21-13, 21-13. That was followed soon after by a 21-13, 21-12 win by Ahrens and van Brunt at No. 2 and the Javelinas' second victory of the day was clinched by seniors Tenley Housler (Bulverde, Texas) and Macie Satterwhite (Callisburg, Texas) in the No. 1 spot, 21-13, 21-16.

TAMUK captured its final point of the day when seniors Meghan Merlino (Sacramento, Calif.) and Christina Gragasin (Celina, Texas) locked up the fifth flight, 25-23, 21-14.

These victories mean the Javelinas currently share first place in Pool D with Spring Hill and the winner of the pool will be decided on Friday, when the two sides meet at 1 p.m. CT.
