AUSTIN, Texas- The Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball team dropped a 5-4 decision to the St. Edwards Hilltoppers in a Lone Star Conference series opener on Thursday at Lucian Hamilton Field, despite sophomore
Nick Wolff (Klien, Texas) going 4-4 and belting a pair of home runs.
The Javelinas (23-12, 21-12 LSC) were bested by the Hilltoppers (23-18, 23-18 LSC) in a matchup that saw their catcher have a perfect day at the plate, while starting pitcher
Kolby Lunsford (Helotes, Texas) tossed six innings of three-run baseball.
Wolff snagged the first of three RBIs in the top of the first as he scored senior
Giancarlo Servin (Edinburg, Texas) with a double into left field. The Hilltoppers answered back in the bottom of the second, pushing three across the plate with a bases-clearing double.
Both teams were kept off the scoreboard until the seventh, when Wolff smashed the first pitch he saw over the outfield wall for his first home run of the day. The inning continued with a double by sophomore
Jake Chapman (Boerne, Texas), prompting classman
Ivan Duarte (Juarez, Mexico) to bring him home with a base-hit into left field.
In the top of the eighth, Wolff logged his seventh home run of the season, delivering a 4-3 Blue and Gold lead. In doing so the sophomore has tied Servin for the program lead in both round-trippers and in RBIs on the season with 32 apiece.
The Hilltoppers' capitalized on a Javelina miscue in the bottom of the frame to even the score, before plating another on an RBI groundout to take the lead and score the final run of the ballgame.
The series continues on Fridays, as the team square off in a doubleheader, with first pitch set for 2 p.m.
