Javelinas win one, drop one on first day in Mississippi

TAMUK tops UT-Chattanooga, falls in nail-biter to Spring Hill

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Texas A&M-Kingsville beach volleyball team picked up wins out of the fourth and fifth flights in both matches on Friday afternoon, finishing the afternoon with a 4-1 win over the UT-Chattanooga Mocs and a 3-2 loss to the Spring Hill Badgers on the first day of the Southern Miss Beach Invitational at the Southern Miss Beach Volleyball Complex in Hattiesburg, Miss.

This 1-1 day leaves the Javelinas with a 12-9 record.

TAMUK vs. UT-Chattanooga

The Javelinas went to work quickly against the Mocs, with seniors Roxanne Morris (Goliad, Texas) and Meghan Merlino (Sacramento, Calif.) putting up the match's first point out of the fourth flight, 21-13, 21-15. Next it was senior Kapri Pelle (Auburn, Calif.) and sophomore Jackie Alanis (McAllen, Texas) who triumphed at No. 5, 21-14, 21-14.

The Mocs answered with a win in the third flight, but the Blue and Gold clinched a victory when seniors Macie Satterwhite (Callisburg, Texas) and Tenley Housler (Bulverde, Texas) secured the No. 1 match, 21-15, 21-17. The last point on TAMUK's ledger came from junior Lexi Ahrens (Virginia, Minn.) and sophomore Adrienne van Brunt (Corpus Christi, Texas), who outfought their opponents at No. 2 and emerged victorious, 18-21, 21-19, 15-11.

TAMUK vs. Spring Hill

The match started with the Javs outlasting the Badgers in a three-set contest at No. 4, with a 21-16, 17-21, 15-8 decision going to Morris and Merlino. SHC responded by taking the third flight, 21-17, 21-12, and the second, 24-22, 21-18, but Gragasin and Gettys put together a come-from-behind effort that ended with TAMUK in possession of the fifth flight, 17-21, 21-17, 15-11. Pelle and Alanis won the sixth match, 21-18, 21-15.

Unfortunately for the Javelinas, SHC only just pulled out the top flight to clinch the match, with the final reading 17-21, 21-19, 17-15.
