KINGSVILLE, Texas- The Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball team polished off a series sweep on Sunday, besting the Oklahoma Christian Eagles 8-1, in nine innings of Lone Star Conference action at Nolan Ryan Field in Kingsville, Texas.
JASON GONZALES POSTGAME
"I'll tell you that's fun to watch," said coach
Jason Gonzales. "We've always said that we think we've got four aces, and the difficult part is we've got some really good arms in the bullpen that we haven't been able to get work because our starters have given us such good quality starts. It is a good problem to have but again, with what they did this weekend, with the wind blowing out and aluminum bats, I think to hold them to about four runs all weekend, you can't say enough about those guys and how they did.
Redshirt senior
Brandon Symmank (Cypress, Texas) and the Javelinas (14-4, 12-4 LSC) held the Eagles (6-14, 6-14 LSC) to four runs across a four-game series as the right-handed-pitcher allowed just two hits in the first seven innings of the series finale, striking out nine in the process.
At the plate, sophomore
Shelby Becker (Giddings, Texas) led the team in RBIs earning three, while sophomore
Garett Thompson (New Braunfels, Texas) and senior
Kyler Bumstead (Kountze, Texas) each plated two.
Back-to-back singles by Bumstead and sophomore
Cole Payne (Cuero, Texas) put runners on base in the bottom of the second, before consecutive doubles by redshirt sophomore
Ivan Duarte (Juarez, Mexico) and Thompson resulted in a 3-0 Blue and Gold lead. Thompson then took third on a wild pitch before scoring on an RBI groundout, courtesy of Becker.
Payne worked a walk to open the fourth, before Bumstead clobbered a ball over the left field wall, putting the Javelinas up five. Another free pass was issued to Thompson later in the inning, prompting Becker to drop a double into left field, placing the Hogs up 7-0.
The Pack scored their eighth run of the ballgame in the sixth inning, with Becker plating Duarte on an RBI single through the left side of the infield.
Michael DiFiore scored the only Eagle run of the ballgame in the top of the seventh, on a solo home run.
Redshirt senior
Matthew Oleson (Driftwood, Texas) came in and allowed a single in the eighth, before classmate
Mason Foster (Dilley, Texas) struck out one in a clean ninth inning, sealing the victory.
The Javelinas now visit the Alamo City, for a four-game Lone Star Conference series against the St. Mary's Rattlers at Dickson Stadium, with game one scheduled for 6 p.m. on Friday.
