Javelinas best Rattlers in series opener

TAMUK plated 13 runs across nine-innings of Lone Star Conference action

SAN ANTONIO- The Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball team earned a 13-6 victory in the series opener between the Javelinas and the St. Mary's Rattlers on Saturday at Dickson Field.in San Antonio, Texas.

The Javelinas (15-4, 13-4 LSC) bested the Rattlers (5-14, 3-14 LSC), with redshirt sophomore Ivan Duarte (Juarez, Mexico) going 4-5, and plating four runs, while senior Kolby Lunsford (Helotes, Texas) allowed just one run in five innings of work. Additionally, Lunsford struck out two and scattered six hits to earn the win in the series opener.

The Rattlers opened up the scoring, plating a run in the bottom of the first on a single into left field, before the Pack pushed four runs across the plate in the top of the third.

Redshirt freshman Ramsey Amador (Edinburg, Texas) walked to open the third, before a double by Duarte led to a bases-clearing single by sophomore Garrett Thompson (New Braunfels, Texas) for a 2-1 Blue and Gold lead. A trio of Rattler miscues allowed sophomores Shelby Becker (Giddings, Texas) and Jake Chapman (Boerne, Texas) to cross the plate later in the inning, pushing the TAMUK edge to three.

A two-bagger by sophomore Nick Wolff (Klien, Texas) scored senior Giancarlo Servin (Edinburg, Texas) in the fifth, before senior Kyler Bumstead (Kountze, Texas) slapped a single through the left side, resulting in a 6-1 Javelina lead.

TAMUK kept the offense going in the sixth, with Thompson plating a pair of runs on a single into center field. The Rattlers then stole one back in the bottom of the frame on a sac fly, resulting in an 8-2 score line.

A two-out rally in the top of the seventh allowed the Javelinas to grab their largest lead of the day, with Duarte scoring three after smashing his second double of the game. Bumstead was struck by a pitch, before a single sophomore Cole Payne (Cuero, Texas) and a walk by Amador loaded up the bases for Duarte, who delivered a nine-run Blue and Gold edge.

StMU clawed back to within five across the next two frames, scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh, before adding a pair in the eighth, for an 11-6 score, going into the final inning.

In the ninth, the Javelinas picked up two insurance runs as Duarte dropped a single into left field, scoring redshirt freshman Jaden Cavazos (Weslaco, Texas), who entered as a pinch-runner. Duarte swiped second, before a throwing error allowed him to cross the plate, increasing the TAMUK total to 13.

The Rattlers had the bases loaded with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, as senior Mason Foster (Dilley, Texas) was called out of the bullpen. Foster quickly induced a fly ball that found Thompson's glove, cementing the 13-6 victory,

The teams face off twice tomorrow, with a Sunday doubleheader scheduled for 2 p.m., before the series finale Monday at 1 p.m.
