KINGSVILLE, Texas- The Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball team earned a pair of victories over the Oklahoma Christian Eagles on Saturday, earning a 5-1 win in game one, before a 4-2 triumph in Lone Star Conference action at Nolan Ryan Field.
JASON GONZALES POSTGAME
"Everybody's got to do their job," said coach Jason Gonzales. "When these guys are putting up zeroes after zeroes after zeroes it allows these guys to settle in and try to figure out the other pitcher, and then were able to score a few runs, and what that does consequentially is it takes a little more pressure off our starter pitcher and he can go charge these guys…it's fun to be a part of this thing.
The Javelinas (13-4,11-4 LSC) relied on potent pitching to overcome the Eagles (6-13, 6-13 LSC) as the Pack held opposing hitters to a .192 average on the day, with sophomore Kobe Jaramillo (Bishop, Texas) and senior Logan Garza (Round Rock, Texas) each earning wins.
Game One
Jaramillo was dominant on the slab in game one, tossing seven strikeouts in five frames while allowing four hits.Â
The Eagles pushed one across the plate, scoring first as Michael DiFiore hit a solo home run in the top of the third.Â
The Pack scored all five of their runs in the bottom of the frame after redshirt sophomore Ivan Duarte (Juarez, Mexico) hit a leadoff single. A walk and an Eagle miscue later had ducks on the pond for senior Giancarlo Servin (Edinburg, Texas), who was issued a free pass, scoring Duarte for the Javelinas' first run. From there, sophomore Jake Chapman (Boerne, Texas) earned another walk, which allowed sophomore Garrett Thompson (New Braunfels, Texas) to come home.Â
Sill in the third, sophomore Shelby Becker (Giddings, Texas) charged home on a wild pitch, before senior Kyler Bumstead (Kountze, Texas) scored the Javelina's final two runs on a single up the middle.Â
With two outs and bases loaded in the top of the seventh coach, Gonzales called upon junior Luis Martinez (Grulla, Texas) to protect the Packs 5-1, lead, as the righty induced a groundout, earning first save of his Blue and Gold career.Â
Game Two
Garza twirled a gem in the second game, striking out seven in six innings, allowing three hits.Â
OC struck first again in game two, plating a run in the top of the first on a fielder's choice ground ball before sophomore Nick Wolff (Klein, Texas) evened the game in the second, smashing a solo shot over the right field wall.
The Pack added two more in the fourth as Servin and Wolff came around and scored, following singles by redshirt freshman Ramsey Amador (Edinburg, Texas) and Bumstead.Â
The Javs tacked on an insurance run in the sixth, with Amador delivering a 4-1 lead, scoring Wolff, who got on base with a double into left field.Â
Oklahoma Christian got one back in the top of the seventh before sophomore Colton Taylor (Amherstburg, Ontario, Canada) shut the door, earning his fourth save of the season.Â
The series concludes Sunday, with nine-innings scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at Nolan Ryan Field.
