KINGSVILLE, Texas- The Texas A&M-Kingsville track and field program will visit San Antonio on Friday, as the throwing program kicks off the outdoor season at The Trinity University Track and Filed Stadium for the 2022 Trinity Invitational.
Competition opens at 3 p.m. with sophomores Andrea Jimenez (San Diego, Texas) and Katryna Hernandez (Skidmore, Texas) joining senior Diana Bustos (Mission, Texas) in the hammer throw.
After claiming a silver medal at the Lone Star Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships, Hernandez carries momentum into the outdoor season with a 14.36m (47-1.50) toss that shattered the school record.
Shortly after the women's competition wraps up, sophomore Felix Hernandez (Edinburg, Texas) and senior Stephen Cardenas (Ingleside, Texas) step into the ring for the first time outdoors, also competing in the hammer throw.
Competition continues Saturday in the Alamo City with the javelin, shot put, and discus all on the docket.
Senior Gertrudis Balli (Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico) enters the discus as the top-seeded athlete, thanks to a personal-best distance of 50.58m (165-11) from the 2021 Lone Star Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Classmate D.J. Delancy (Bethel Town, Jamacia) headlines the men's shot put after winning the league's indoor championships on a 17.34m (56-10.75) mark a week ago.
Additionally, freshman Jesse Contreras (Elsa, Texas) is slated to make his Blue and Gold debut, competing in the shot put and discus in San Antonio, while sophomore Mackenzie Contreras (Edcouch, Texas) rounds out the group taking on the women's shot put and discus on Saturday.
