Javelinas fall to Rams in Saturday doubleheader

TAMUK looks to bounce back and earn a series split on Sunday

SAN ANGELO, Texas — The Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball team dropped a pair of Lone Star Conference games to the #10 Angelo State Rams on Saturday, losing game one 15-3, before falling 13-7 in game two at Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium.

After winning the series opener on Friday, the Javelinas (18-11, 16-11LSC) lost to the Rams (23-6, 20-6 LSC) twice and head into Sunday, eyeing a road-series split against a 10th ranked Angelo State team.

Game One

Senior Kyler Bumstead (Kountze, Texas), sophomore Jake Chapman (Boerne, Texas), and redshirt senior Hayden Fails (Sweeny, Texas) each plated runs in the first game, as the Rams got the better of the Hogs, winning 15-3, after putting two runs on the board in the bottom of the first on RBI groundouts.

Bumstead got the Hogs on the scoreboard in the third, plating sophomore Ivan Duarte (Juarez, Mexico) on a groundout toward second base. The Rams then tacked four runs on in the bottom of the frame, handing them a 6-1 lead.

Chapman dropped a single into left field in the top of the fourth, allowing sophomore Nick Wolff (Klein, Texas) to score for their second run of the day. Senior Mason Foster (Dilley, Texas) tossed a clean bottom frame, resulting in a 6-2 score line.

Angelo States offense added nine runs in the fifth, before the Javelinas scored the final run of the ballgame in the top of the sixth. Junior Colton Allen (Katy, Texas) got on base with a single before a double by Fails allowed him to cross the plate.

Game Two

The Rams claimed game two as well, besting the Javelinas 13-7, while Chapman, senior Giancarlo Servin (Edinburg, Texas), and Wolff logged a trio of home runs.

Chapman provided the Packs a pair of runs in the top of the second , smashing a home run over the left field wall that scored Wolff, who reached base on a single. The Rams equalized in the bottom of the frame as Kolby Kelton plated two on a single into the gap in right-center.

In the top of the third, sophomore Shelby Becker (Giddings, Texas) led off the inning with a walk and a stolen base, before charging to third on a wild pitch that put him 90 feet away from home plate with no outs in the frame. Wolff hit a deep sacrificed fly into center field that allowed Becker to tag up and give the Javelinas a 3-2 edge. However, the Rams quickly got the run back as Adam Walters led off the bottom of the third with a solo home run. They pushed another run across later in the inning, resulting in a one-run deficit for TAMUK.

In the fifth, Angelo State loaded the bases and hit a grand slam to take an 8-3 lead, before plating another on a single into center field.

Servin led off the sixth with a solo home run to the deepest part of the park, trimming the Ram lead down to five. Angelo State then scored four more in the bottom of the inning,

The Javelinas rallied for three runs in the seventh, as a double by Fails and a single by sophomore Garrett Thompson (New Braunfels, Texas) put runners on the corners for Wolff, who belted a three run bomb, that resulted in a 13-7 final score.

Sunday's series finale will see a 1 p.m. first pitch as the Javelinas eye a series split against Angelo State at Foster Field.
