KINGSVILLE, Texas- The Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball team is headed to San Angelo, Texas, for a four-game Lone Star Conference series against the Angelo State Rams at Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium, beginning Friday at 6 p.m.
The Javelinas (17-9, 15-9 LSC) visit the Rams (21-5, 19-5 LSC), who sit second in the LSC, after sweeping Texas A&M International. Additionally, the Rams are ranked 10th in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association's weekly poll. Meanwhile, the Hogs maintain fifth in the conference standings while boasting the league's top pitching staff.
TAMUK's bullpen holds the top spot in several categories, including WHIP at 1.33, ERA at 3.83, and hits allowed per nine innings with eight. Individually, redshirt senior
Brandon Symmank (Cypress, Texas) leads the league with a 2.12 ERA, a 0.97 WHIP, while holding opponents to a .176 batting average.
Five members of the Blue and Gold hold ERA's under three, with junior
Luis Martinez (Grulla. Texas) striking out 12 in 10 appearances and sophomore
Colton Taylor (Amherstburg, Ontario, Canada) boasting five saves, the eighth-most in the nation.
Senior
Giancarlo Servin (Edinburg, Texas) carries momentum into the week's series at the plate after logging five hits, including two doubles and a home run against Lubbock Christian. He slugged .917 against the Chaps and worked three walks en route to two RBIs.
Sophomores
Shelby Becker (Giddings, Texas) and
Ivan Duarte (Juarez, Mexico) lead the Javelinas seasonally as Becker boasts a .407 batting average and a 1.027 OPS while Duarte has logged 13 RBIs, with 21 hits and 17 walks, resulting in a .500 on-base percentage.
The Rams lead the conference in fielding percentage at .975, OBP at .455, and stolen bases with 78 on the year. Angelo State also has 10 batters averaging over .300, including Justin Lee, who tops the league at.474. and Austin Beck, who's logged 41 RBIs so far this season.
Jake Rodgers holds six wins for the top mark in the LSC on the mound, while Aaron Munson and Benjamin Elder each sit at four. ASU has had seven different starting pitchers thus far and holds a team ERA of 4.39 with 186 strikeouts.
Following Friday's matchup, the teams will play a Saturday doubleheader at 4 p.m., before the series finale Sunday at 1 p.m.
