KINGSVILLE, Texas – On a day when they honored the members of the team's 2022 senior class, the Texas A&M-Kingsville beach volleyball team put together a perfect afternoon on the court, first dispatching the Mary Hardin Baylor Crusaders 4-1, then sweeping the Abilene Christian Wildcats by a 5-0 score on Tuesday afternoon at the Javelina Beach Courts in Kingsville, Texas.
These triumphs push the Javelinas' record to 8-6 and they've now won four-in-a-row.
"I thought we did a nice job in the wind," said coach Tanya Allen. "It was pretty darn windy today, so I thought we did a good job keeping track of the wind, a good job serving in the wind and that allowed us to take leads we were able to hold on to."
TAMUK vs. MHB
The Javelinas quickly seized the lead in the day's first match thanks to a 21-10, 21-9 showing from two of their seniors in the fifth flight, Kapri Pelle (Auburn, Calif.) and Meghan Merlino (Sacramento, Calif.). Junior Lexi Ahrens (Virginia, Minn.) and senior Christina Gragasin (Celina, Texas) secured a 2-0 advantage for the home team by locking up the fourth flight, 21-18, 21-15. The sixth flight was also snatched up by the Javs, with sophomores Jackie Alanis (McAllen, Texas) and Grace Gettys (New Braunfels, Texas) coming out on top, 21-11, 21-5.
Two more members of the team's senior class, Macie Satterwhite (Callisburg, Texas) and Tenley Housler (Bulverde, Texas) won the No. 1 flight in straight sets, 21-12, 21-8 and TAMUK's final point came courtesy of sophomore Rylie Anderson (Justin, Texas) and freshman Madelyn Wallace (La Vernia, Texas) by a score of 21-7, 21-10.
TAMUK vs. ACU
The Javs' fourth sweep of the season came at the expense of the Wildcats and it started with Gettys and Gragasin cruising their way to a 21-8, 21-12 victory in the fifth flight. Not far behind were Merlino and Pelle at No. 4, putting the match's second point on board 21-14, 21-10.
Anderson and Wallace collected their second win of the day by a 21-19, 21-8 score to clinch the match for the Blue and Gold and Housler and Satterwhite tacked on one more by securing the No. 1 contest, 21-14, 21-16. All that was left for TAMUK to secure the sweep was for senior Roxanne Morris (Goliad, Texas) and Ahrens to win the third flight and they did, 21-8, 21-15.
The Javelinas will have to travel to Charleston, S.C., for their next five matches, which will be played as part of the C of C Beach Bash starting on Friday.
