Javelinas fall to Chaps in series opener

TAMUK rallied back from a 7-3 deficit, but were unable to complete the comeback

KINGSVILLE, Texas- The Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball team suffered a 9-7 defeat at the hands of the #24 Lubbock Christian Chaparrals in game one of a Lone Star Conference series at Nolan Ryan Field in Kingsville, Texas.

COACH GONZALES POSTGAME

"There were some unearned runs that we gave them," said coach Jason Gonzales. "I thought most of the time we pitched really well, but again you got to make routine plays and when you don't that's going to be the outcome."

The Javelinas (16-7, 14-7 LSC) fell to the Chaps (18-5, 16-5) after rallying back from a 7-3 deficit to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh.

Senior Giancarlo Servin (Edinburg, Texas) opened the scoring in the second, smashing the first pitch he saw over the left-field wall for his sixth home run of the season.

Senior Kolby Lunsford (Helotes, Texas) was cruising through four innings, as the right-handed pitcher entered the fifth withing surrendering a single hit to an LCU lineup that leads the LSC. His day finished with 4.1 innings pitched, allowing three hits and striking out four.

The Chaps broke through with a five-run fifth, before the Javelinas answered in the bottom of the inning with two runs of their own. Freshman Kyle Perales (Hidalgo, Texas) gave the Javelina their first baserunner of the frame after knocking a double into right center. Shortly thereafter, the based were loaded for sophomore Shelby Becker (Giddings, Texas), who delivered a single through the left side that scored senior Kyler Bumstead (Kountze, Texas) and sophomore Ivan Duarte (Juarez, Mexico).

LCU stretched their lead by two more in the sixth, capitalizing on a Javelina miscue, before the Pack rallied back, scoring four in the seventh.

Sophomore Garrett Thompson (New Braunfels, Texas), Becker, and Servin all worked one-out walks, setting the table for sophomore Nick Wolff (Klein, Texas), who logged an RBI groundout, and classmate Jake Chapman (Boerne, Texas), who shot a bases-clearing double down the left-field line, for a 7-7 score line heading into the eighth.

LCU regained the lead in the eighth on a Javelina error, before adding another in the ninth on a Jarred Gibson single. Still in the ninth, freshman Robbie Spencer (Portland, Texas) toed the slab with the bases loaded and no outs, as the newcomer struck out a hitter before inducing a ground ball double play to keep the Pack in the ballgame.

Servin worked a leadoff walk in the bottom of the ninth, but he was unable to come around and score.

The team's faceoff again in a Friday doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m., before the series finale Saturday at 1 p.m.
