SAN ANTONIO — The Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball team dropped a Lone Star Conference doubleheader against St. Mary's on Sunday as the Rattlers took game one 6-1, and game two 6-0 at Dickson Field in San Antonio.
After winning the series opener on Saturday, the Javelinas (15-6, 13-6 LSC) lost to the Rattlers (7-14, 5-14 LSC) in a pair of games Sunday and now look to bounce back and earn a series split in a nine-inning matchup on Monday.
Game One
Despite scoring just one earned run in the contest, the Rattlers earned a 6-1 victory in game one.
Sophomore
Kobe Jaramillo (Bishop, Texas) started on the bump and struck out five in three innings on the mound, before freshman
Robbie Spencer (Portland, Texas) tossed three hitless frames in the back half of the game. At the plate, sophomore
Kyler Bumstead (Kountze, Texas) went 2-2 on a pair of singles while recording a walk in the first matchup.
StMU got on the board in the bottom of the first, with Jake Mares crossing the plate on a catcher's interference, before an RBI groundout increased the Rattler lead to two.
The Javelinas had the bases loaded with no outs in the top of the third, but could only come up with a run, as redshirt freshman
Ramsey Amador (Edinburg, Texas) crossed the plate on a double play.
The Rattlers grabbed a 5-1 lead in the third, after scoring a trio of runs on a pair of Javelina miscues.
Spencer entered in the fourth and kept the Javelinas within striking distance, throwing two scoreless innings, before StMU grabbed another run in the bottom of the sixth on a sacrificed fly ball.
The Javelinas put a runner in scoring position in the seventh, but the threat did not come to pass as the Rattlers secured a 6-1 win.
Game Two
StMU won game two 6-0, while senior
Logan Garza (Round Rock, Texas) tossed the first 4.1, striking out four, while classmate
Mason Foster (Dilley, Texas) threw the final 1.2 of the ballgame, punching out one. Sophomore
Jake Chapman (Boerne, Texas) smacked a pair of singles in three plate appearances to lead the Pack at the plate.
The Rattlers again scored the first run of the contest, as they plated a run in the bottom of the first on a bloop into right-center. They increased their lead to four in the fourth after two runs scored on a double, before adding another on a sacrificed fly ball.
StMU added to their lead in the fifth, as a single into left field resulted in a 5-0 score line. They picked up their sixth run in the sixth inning on a Javelina miscue.
Sophomore
Shelby Becker (Giddings, Texas) worked a walk in the seventh, before swiping second to put himself in scoring position. He advanced to third on a single by Chapman but was unable to cross the plate before the Rattlers recorded the final out of the ballgame.
Monday's series finale will see a 1 p.m. first pitch as the Javelinas eye a series split against St. Mary's at Dickson Field.
