Javelinas open LSC Tournament at home taking on the Dustdevils

TAMUK will host Texas A&M International in the SPEC on Tuesday in the opening round of the conference tournament, with a 7 p.m. tipoff

THE MATCHUP    
• The Javelinas (17-10, 10-6 LSC) host the Texas A&M International Dustdevils (17-10, 8-8 LSC) on Tuesday, in the opening round of the Lone Star Conference Tournament
 • Thursday, Mar 1, TAMUK invites TAMIU into the Steinke Physical Education Center with a 7 p.m. tipoff
• The Javelinas enter the tournament as the eighth seed, while the Dustdevils are the nine seed
 • The winner advances to the Comerica Center in Frisco, Texas, for a showdown against the one-seed West Texas A&M Lady Buffs on Friday, Mar 4. 
 •TAMIU split last week, besting Cameron 70-66 before losing to West Texas A&M 79-58
 • The teams met twice this season, with the Javelinas winning both matchups
 • On Jan 13, they faced off in Laredo, Texas, with TAMUK earning a 60-56 victory as Annelise Dominguez scored 10 points with nine three-pointers
 • They met again on Jan 15, in Kingsville, Texas, where the Javelinas bested the Dustdevils 67-39, with Kryslyn Jones earning 23 points, while Anastacia Mickens scored 17
 • Rai Brown leads the TAMIU offense averaging 16.7 ppg, while Clara Fernandez logs 10.3 ppg
 • Fernandez also leads the Dustdevils in rebounds averaging 5.7 each time out and in steals at 66
 • TAMIU is the best passing team in the conference, with 464 assists placing them atop the leaderboard
• The Dustdevils also lead the conference in steals per game with 11 and in turnovers forced at 21.93 per contest
 • Additionally, TAMIU is the most efficient three-point shooting team in the LSC, making triples at a 34.5% clip
  
 Last Time Out
• The Javelinas went 0-2 on the road last week, falling against West Texas A&M and Cameron
 • TAMUK was defeated by WT 86-60, with Kryslyn Jones scoring 19 points
 • The Javs were unable to overcome CU, losing 74-68, as Georgia Ohiaeri set a new career-best 24 points while snagging nine rebounds
 • The Javelinas finished 17-10 overall, with a 10-6 league mark earning them the eight seed in the LSC tournament

Conference Contenders
• The Javelinas finished 10-6 in conference play earning the eight seed in the LSC tournament
• The Blue and Gold last made the league tournament in 2019
• TAMUK represents the only eight seed in tournament history to defeat a one seed after beating Easten New Mexico 69-67 in overtime
• The schools all time postseason record is 14-25, and they last won the LSC tournament in 2000

30-plus
• Kryslyn Jones dropped 31 points against Midwestern State, sparking an 18-point comeback victory  
• She represents the first Javelina to cross the 30-point benchmark since Angelica Wilson against Cameron in 2018
• Jones shot 51.7% from the floor, going 4-7 from beyond the arc and 11-13 from the free throw line
• She also snagged seven rebounds in the five-point win
Hometown Heroes    
• The Javelinas remain undefeated at home through 11 contests, including an upset of #1 ranked Lubbock Christian
•The last time TAMUK started this hot in the SPEC, they began the 2009-10 season 12-0 at home, before closing the season out 18-10 overall
 
Double-Double           
• Anastacia  Mickens recorded 17 points and 11 rebounds in a conference win over TAMIU for the programs first double-double of the season
•Mickens  represents the first Javelina to accomplish this feat since Bri-Anna Soliz scored 10 points and snagged 11 rebounds in a 58-39 loss to Angelo State on February 20, 2020.
• Devon Williams logged TAMUK's second double-double of the season logging
 
Chasing History         
• The Javelinas  6-0 start to conference play last happened in the 2000-01 season when TAMUK picked up wins in the first six LSC contests and finished the year 27-7 with an 11-3 league record
•The 2000-01 team also won the NCAA South Central Region tournament to make its first appearance in the NCAA Elite Eight
 
Down Goes Frazier    
• TAMUK  toppled the top-ranked team in the nation to wrap up the 2021 calendar year with a 59-42 win over No. 1/1 Lubbock Christian on December 31
• It is the first win over the No. 1-ranked team in program history and first win over the defending NCAA Division II National Champions
• The Javelinas held the Lady Chaps to their lowest scoring output since 2010, the lowest shooting percentage of the year and worst margin of defeat since 2016
 
Defense Wins Accolades      
• Anastacia Mickens became the second weekly defensive honoree of the season after helping the Javs hold a potent Dustdevils offense to 47.5 points across a pair of matches
• Devon Williams was named LSC Defensive Player of the Week following TAMUK's upset win over Lubbock Christian to wrap up the 2021 calendar year
• She became the first Javelina to receive either accolade from the league office since Anastacia Mickens was named Defensive Player of the Week on December 14, 2020
 
Third Time's The Charm       
• The Javelinas started 3-0 in league play following the win over Western New Mexico
• The last time TAMUK started 3-0 in the Lone Star Conference was the 2006-07 season
• The Javelinas have only started 3-0 in league play six times in program history
• The best start to the conference schedule came in the 1999-00 season when the Blue and Gold started 7-0 en route to a 15-1 finish and the program's only LSC regular season and tournament championship
 
Texas Two-Step        
• Anastacia Mickens put up 24 points, a new career-high, in a 66-56 win at home against Western Oregon on November 24
• It is the most points by a Javelina in a game since Cloe Lane put up 25 in a 66-65 loss to Texas Woman's on February 7, 2019
• Only two Javelinas surpassed 20 points in a game in the 2020-21 season

Blanked          
• The Javelinas held Chadron State to zero points in the third quarter en route to a 58-51 win on November 12 to open the season
• It is the first time ever the Javelinas held their opponents to zero points in a quarter since the NCAA shifted to the quarter format ahead of the 2015-16 season
• Since head coach Michael Madrid took over, the Javelinas have held their opponents to fewer than 10 points in a quarter 39 times
