KINGSVILLE, Texas – With two games remaining on their 2021-22 schedule, the Texas A&M-Kingsville men's basketball team is in possession of the 12th and final spot in the Lone Star Conference Tournament and the Javelinas will be aiming to lock down a berth in the postseason during a road trip that will first take them to Canyon, Texas, where they'll face the West Texas A&M Buffaloes on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. inside the First United Bank Center, then to Lawton, Okla. for a 4 p.m. date with the Cameron Aggies at Aggie Gym.
The Hogs have gained ground in the conference standings by picking up three straight wins, all over teams ahead of them in the league table. This streak started with a 77-69 road triumph at UT Permian Basin, followed by a 59-58 squeaker over Midwestern State and the Javs kept it going by dropping DBU, 74-70 in their regular season home finale.
In all three of those games, junior Creighton Avery (Corpus Christi, Texas) racked up 16 points and he's shooting 55 percent from the floor over those three contests. Since the calendar turned over to 2022, Avery has been TAMUK's second leading scorer and he's also led the squad in assists. Over his last six games, the junior from Corpus Christi is 8-of-16 from beyond the arc.
Another hot Javelina shooter is sophomore Jake Majors (Corpus Christi, Texas). Over his last 12 games, Majors is at an even 50 percent shooting and he owns a 52 percent clip on three-pointers. Majors has hit at least once from deep in each of TAMUK's last seven games and 11 of the last 12 and he's also played more minutes than any other Javelina in 2022.
TAMUK's last two regular season opponents are two teams who've had very different seasons. The Buffs' 9-5 LSC record has them third in the conference and their 23-6 mark overall has then on track to reach the NCAA Tournament for the 20th time in program history.
WT's offense is averaging a league-best 81.9 points per game and they're led by three scorers who rank inside the top 15 in the LSC. The Buffs also own the best turnover margin in the conference at plus-5.55, good enough for seventh in the nation.
The Aggies, meanwhile, are nearing the end of the campaign that has so far yielded only four victories. The highlight over CU's season came on Feb. 12th, when they earned a double overtime victory over then-No. 3 Lubbock Christian but since then they've dropped three straight, all by double figures.
