KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Texas A&M-Kingsville softball team has rattled off eight straight victories and moved into the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Top 25 at No. 20, but they'll be tested again during a road trip that encompasses seven games in four days.
TAMUK will start the weekend by matching up against the Henderson State Reddies on Saturday at 11 a.m., followed by a 1:30 p.m. clash with the Ouachita Baptist Tigers. Sunday's festivities begin when the Javs meet the Christian Brothers Lady Bucs at 10 a.m., then take on the Midwestern State Mustangs at 12:30 p.m. All four of these games will be held in Arkadelphia, Ark.
On Monday, the Javelinas will take on Henderson State in Arkadelphia again, this time at 2 p.m., and they'll conclude their time in The Natural State with a doubleheader on Tuesday in Magnolia, Ark., against the Southern Arkansas Muleriders beginning at 2 p.m.
The recent Javelina hot streak is evidenced by the team's statistics, as they currently own the Lone Star Conference's best ERA and second-best batting average. On the national leaderboard, the Javelinas own spots in the top 10 in each category.
Leading the way in ERA for TAMUK are sophomore Beth Montes (San Antonio, Texas) and freshman Carissa De Los Santos (Kingsville, Texas). Combined, they've allowed only two earned runs in 27 1/3 innings, issuing just two walks against 28 strikeouts. The Javs can also throw the reigning NFCA Pitcher of the Week in junior Saidi Castillo (Kingsville, Texas), who's coming off back-to-back three hit shutouts that boosted her record to 3-0.
Also collecting some recent hardware was senior Loren Kelly (Rockport, Texas), who was chosen as the LSC Hitter of the Week after batting .786 in her last five games. Only one player in the nation has more steals than Kelly's 12, her .636 batting average is tops in the conference among players with at least 20 at-bats and she's played the fewest games among all LSC players who've scored at least 10 runs.
