ODESSA, Texas- A busy day at the diamond saw the Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball team claim victory over UT Permian Basin in Odessa, Texas in a postponed contest before dropping a 6-4 seven-inning showdown and taking a 20-4 lead in a game three matchup that was delayed due to darkness in Lone Star Conference action at Roden Field.
Game One
Following a postponement from Friday, the Javelinas held a 22-13 edge heading into the bottom of the ninth, where sophomore
Hunter Kloesel (Shiner, Texas) polished off the Falcons confirming the win.
Game Two
UTPB got on the board early in game two, with Oswaldo Godina logging a three-run homer in the opening frame, handing them the lead.
The Pack answered back in the top of the fifth, taking a 4-3 lead, with a senior
Kyler Bumstead (Kountze, Texas) kicking things off with a double. Bumstead later crossed the plate on a sophomores
Garrett Thompson (New Braunfels. Texas) RBI single. Thompson then came home on a throwing error, and sophomore
Shelby Becker (Giddings, Texas) scored on a wild pitch. Classmates
Nick Wolff (Klien, Texas) and
Jake Chapman (Boerne, Texas) capped off the inning with RBIs of their own, knotting the game at four apiece.
The Falcons pushed across two more in the fifth, regaining the lead at 6-4. while keeping the Javelinas at bay for the remainder of the contest
Game Three
In his first start of the season, senior
Logan Garza (Round Rock, Texas) remains in line for the win as the reigning LSC Newcomer of the Year struck out three in five innings of work, allowing four runs.
The Hogs struck first in the top of the first, with back-to-back singles by Chapman and Wolff pushing across two runs. Their success continued as they increased the Blue and Gold lead to six in the second, with Becker and Chapman earning RBI's before a Falcon error allowed two more to score.
UTPB provided the only blemish on Garza's line in the bottom of the second as George Melendez smacked a grand slam into left field.
Already up 6-4, the Javelinas tacked on four more in the fourth as senior
Giancarlo Servin (Edinburgh, Texas) knocked in a pair on a two-run bomb to dead center field. Redshirt freshman
Ramsey Amador (Edinburgh, Texas) knocked in Chapman later in the inning before scoring himself on a
Matthew Castro (Corpus Christi, Texas) sacrificed fly that placed TAMUK up 10-4.
Three more crossed the plate for the Javs in the fifth with a Servin double, combined with singled by Wolff and Amador, providing a nine-run edge.
Seven runs in the seventh-placed TAMUK up 20-4 as back-to-back hit batters allowed Wolff and Amador to cross the plate before Bumstead added a run on a wild pitch. Falcon errors continued to pile up as TAMUK scored their 17th run on an error and their 18th on another wild pitch. A redshirt sophomore Jessie Gonzales (Robstown, Texas) sac fly and Chapman RBI single later had the Javs up 16 before darkness caused the postponement.
Game three will be resumed at 1 p.m. Sunday, with two outs in the top of the seventh with Wolff at the plate and Chapman on first.
