Ohiaeri provides a bright spot in loss to Rams

This sophomore forward logged a career-high 16 points in a 72-58 loss to Angelo State

SAN ANGELO, Texas — The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team dropped a 72-58 decision to the Angelo State Rams in Lone Star Conference action on Thursday, at Stephens Arena in San Angelo, Texas.

"I thought we got out coached and out played in every aspect of the game." said coach Michael Madrid. "Angelo did a tremendous job of exposing us in many ways. We have an opportunity to improve tomorrow in practice and look forward to the challenges ahead."

The Rams (10-11, 7-3 LSC) got the better of the Javelinas (15-7, 8-3 LSC), while junior Georgia Ohiaeri (Las Vegas, Nevada set a new career-high in points.

The Las Vegas native logged 16 points in the loss, going 5-8 from the field and knocking down five free throws in 25 minutes on the floor. Her previous benchmark came from her days at UC Riverside, when she dropped 14 against Cal State Fullerton. Additionally, Ohiaeri logged six rebounds, two steals, and a block against ASU.

Also finding success junior Mia Cherry (Brock, Texas) scored in double-figures for the third consecutive contest, logging 11 and picking up five rebounds.

Sophomore Kryslyn Jones (Edmond, Oklahoma) got the Javs on the board, nailing a three-pointer to take a 3-2 lead early in the first quarter. The teams traded buckets for the remainder of the period, with freshman Jayde Tschritter (Corpus Christi, Texas) sinking one from range before Cherry knocked down a jumper placing TAMUK down one heading into the second.

The Javelinas knotted things up at 16 apiece with seven minutes remaining in the half before a 16-3 Ram run saw ASU take a 34-22 lead into the locker room.

Angelo State picked up right where they left off in the second half, scoring 12 of the first 20 points in the third quarter. Before the end of the frame, the Rams had earned a 20 points edge, heading into the fourth up 55-35.

TAMUK continued fighting until the final whistle, outscoring ASU 23-17 in the last 10 minutes of the contest, aided by a 14-3 run that pulled them within 13 and featured triples by Ohiaeri and senior Anastacia Mickens (Beaumont, Texas). Their success proved too little too late, the Rams maintained their lead until the final whistle claiming a 14 point victory.

The Javelinas look to end a three-game road skid as they take on UT Permian Basin Saturday, with a 2 p.m. tipoff in Odessa, Texas, at the Falcon dome. To keep up-to-date with Javelina Women's Basketball, follow the program on Facebook /JavelinaWBB or Twitter @Javelina_WBB.
