ODESSA, Texas — The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball program rallied from down 13, to earn a hard-fought 71-69, road victory over UT Permian Basin at the Falcon Dome in Lone Star Conference play.
"Extremely proud of our effort!" said Coach
Michael Madrid. "This group showed a lot of toughness on the road and gutted out a tremendous win! To play that way down 10 and win speaks volumes about our players and their commitment to our culture! We will learn a lot from this moving forward!"
The Javelinas (16-7, 9-3 LSC) outworked the Falcons (6-18, 2-10 LSC) down the stretch, thanks in large part to sophomore
Georgia Ohiaeri (Las Vegas, Nevada), who recorded a new career-high in points scored, sparking the 13-point comeback win.
Ohiaeri scored 17, shooting 7-12 from the field, and grabbed five rebounds en route to the victory. Additionally, sophomore
Kryslyn Jones (Edmond, Oklahoma) matched Ohiaeri's points total, making six shots from the field at a 60% clip.
Junior
Mia Cherry (Brock, Texas) scored in double figures for the sixth time in seven games, this time dropping 15, making her half her shots, while senior
Anastacia Mickens (Beaumont, Texas) joined her in the double-digit club scoring 10.
Jones got the Javs going early, sinking back-to-back threes and delivering a 6-0 lead, before the Falcons answered by outscoring the Javs 18-4 in for the remainder of the period.
TAMUK pulled within six before the halftime break as Jones and Cherry hit triples, while Ohiaeri poured in a slew of layups and provided stellar defense resulting in a 35-29 Falcon lead.
The Javs trimmed the deficit to two out of the break on a junior
Brianna Pena (Weslaco, Texas) bucket before snagging a 41-40 lead moments later. UTPB fought back as the teams traded blows before a 15-4 Falcon run, placing the opposition up 55-47 heading into the final frame.
With 7:38 remaining in the matchup, UTPB grabbed a 63-50 lead before Mickens converted an and-1, freshman
Annelise Dominguez (El Paso, Texas) knocked down a jumper, and Ohiaeri completed a three-point play of her own to cut the Falcon lead to six. The Las Vegas native then powered to the hoop for another bucker, prompting Cherry to score one of her own, bringing the Javs to within two. Jones nailed a massive triple with 2:19 to hand the Hogs a 69-68 edge. Moments later, Cherry cemented the win, knocking down a jumper and earning the 71-69 road win.
The Javelinas return to the Steinke Physical Education on Thursday as they host MSU-Texas in a Play4Kay Breast Cancer Awareness contest at 5:30 p.m., before playing Texas Women's on senior day, Saturday with a 2 p.m. tipoff.
