KINGSVILLE, Texas- The Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball team is headed to Odessa, Texas, on their first road trip of the 2022 season, taking on the UT Permian Basin Falcons in a four-game Lone Star Conference series at Roden Field that kicks off Friday at 2 p.m.
The teams then square off in a doubleheader on Saturday at noon, before the finale, Sunday at 1 p.m.
The Javelinas (2-2 LSC) battle the Falcons (2-3, 1-3 LSC) after splitting their opening series with Cameron at Nolan Ryan Field last week, despite several stellar pitching performances.
The Pack won their first two games against the Aggies, thanks largely to senior
Kolby Lunsford (Helotes, Texas) and sophomore
Kobe Jaramillo (Bishop, Texas) delivering dominant performances on the mound.
Lunsford was lights out on the mound in the first game of a twin bill against Cameron as the 2021 all-conference selection kick-started the 2022 campaign, earning a win and recording nine strikeouts in 5.2 innings of work, allowing a single hit in a 5-3 victory.
A solid third inning handed the Hogs a lead they didn't relinquish as sophomore
Matthew Castro (Corpus Christi, Texas) recorded the season's first RBI before junior
Steven Bonuz (Port Lavaca, Texas) plated a pair on a hard-hit ground ball up the middle.
Later in game two, Jaramillo toed the slab for the first time in a Blue and Gold uniform as the UTSA transfer scattered four hits across four innings of work, earning six strikeouts and issuing a walk in a 7-3 win.
At the plate in game two, senior
Giancarlo Servin (Edinburg, Texas) and sophomore
Jake Chapman (Boerne, Texas) powered the offense, each recording a home run in the victory.
The Aggie hurlers got the better of TAMUK in games three and four as Cameron took Sunday's contest 3-1, before winning 8-1, on Monday.
Additionally, the Javelina bullpen had a strong weekend with sophomore
Colton Taylor (Amherstburg, Ontario, Canada) tossing 3.1 innings in two appearances striking out eight and earning a save, while junior
Matthew Sesler (Harlingen, Texas) logged three innings, allowing a single hit, and punching out five of the 10 batters he faced.
The Falcons were on the wrong side of a gentleman's sweep last week, winning their first LSC contest 7-5 over Texas A&M International, before the Dustdevils stormed back, taking the next three.
UTPB's hitters have started hot, with Gabriel Morin leading the Falcons with a .575 batting average and a 1.000 slugging percentage in seven at-bats with a home run. Morin isn't the only Falcon hitting well, as seven squad members have sent one over the fence this season, with Jay Desoto leading the team with two.
Clay Thompson leads UTPB in strikeouts with six and earned the win in the Falcons lone-victory over TAMIU, allowing three hits in 3.2 innings of work for a 2.45 ERA. Behind Thompson, Parker Buys delivered five K's despite allowing two earned runs in 3.1 frames.
