Javelinas fall to Rambelles 72-61 in Lone Star Conference Opener

TAMUK looks to bounce back with a 1 p.m. matchup against UTPB on Saturday

SAN ANGELO. Texas.- On Thursday, the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team fell to Angelo State 72-61 in Lone Star Conference play at Stephens Arena.

"We struggled in many ways tonight," said coach Michael Madrid. "I thought Angelo played well in many ways, and we didn't. We didn't shoot it well, and that led to a lack of focus in many other areas. I have to do a better job preparing this team for games. We are looking forward to practice tomorrow and growing as a team."

The Javelinas (3-2, 0-1 LSC) couldn't overcome the Rambelles (5-1, 1-0 LSC), despite sophomore Janessa Payne nailing five three-pointers and pacing the team with 15 points. Additionally, classmate Jayde Tschritter was not far behind, scoring 14 thanks to four triples and a pair of free throws.

Also logging double-digit points, senior Brianna Pena scored 11 with an assist and four rebounds, while junior Georgia Ohiaeri led the team with six boards and sophomore Mia Rivers dished out seven assists.

ASU took the first five points in the opening frame before consecutive layups by Rivers, and Pena cut the Rambelle lead to one. Four ASU free throws rebuilt their edge, but it didn't last long as Pena nailed a triple, Rivers knocked down a jumper, and Ohiaeri sunk a layup for an 11-9 Blue and Gold edge. The Rambelles then embarked on an eight-point run that was interrupted by a trio of Rivers free throws. Moments later, the quarter concluded, with ASU up 20-14.

Trailing by seven, TAMUK trimmed the deficit to four thanks to a junior Veyda Lake bucket and two more free throws courtesy of Rivers. A Payne triple shortly after resulted in a 24-21 score line still favoring the Rambelles. Payne knocked down her second three-pointer of the stanza before ASU answered with a triple of their own. Freshman Shelby Ray sent the Javelinas into the locker with one last three-pointer in the half as the team trailed 30-25.

The Rambelles came out firing in the second half, building a 10-point lead by midway in the third quarter. Tschritter and Payne then sunk shots from beyond the arc, cutting the deficit to six. However, ASU rebuilt their lead, taking a 51-37 edge into the final frame.

Payne opened the scoring in the fourth, nailing a three-pointer, before a Rambelle run extended the opposition's lead to 16. Payne knocked down two more triples before a pair of freshman Alyssa O' Malley free throws, and a Tschritter three-pointer pulled the Javelinas within 10. ASU was able to maintain their lead, eventually taking the contest 72-61.

The Javelinas will be back in action on Saturday as they take on UT Permian Basin with a 1 p.m. tip-off in the Falcon Dome.
