ODESSA. Texas — The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team bested UT Permian Basin 66-55, as the Javelinas claimed their first Lone Star Conference victory on the 2022 campaign at the Falcon Dome on Saturday.Â
Â
"Extremely proud of our effort down the stretch," said coach Michael Madrid. "It wasn't the cleanest game we have played but we are growing. Developing an identity. We hit some clutch shots down the stretch and executed. Defensively we were efficient. I'm thankful for our team and am looking forward to our next opportunity."
Â
The Javelinas (4-2, 1-1 LSC) picked up a road victory over the Falcons (4-4, 1-1 LSC), with the sophomore trio of Mia Rivers, Jayde Tschritter, and Janessa Payne all reaching double-digit scoring figures.Â
Â
Rivers earned 17 points while going 8-for-10 from the charity stripe, logging five rebounds and five assists in the process. Tschritter, meanwhile, hauled in six rebounds and scored 15, while Payne went 5-for-6 from the field for 13 points.Â
Â
Junior Georgia Ohiaeri led the contest in rebounds with 11, with freshman Shelby Ray not far behind at nine. Additionally, Ohiaeri finished one point shy of a double-double with nine.Â
Â
UTPB opened the contest by taking the first six points before buckets by Tschritter, and Ohiaeri brought the Javs within two. Later in the frame, Rivers, and Payne recorded consecutive layups, knotting the contest at eight. The Falcons answered, but back-to-back threes by Tschritter and Payne handed TAMUK a 14-10 edge heading into the second stanza.Â
Â
The Falcons tied the matchup at 14, but Rivers nailed a triple and scored two more on a strip-and-score putting the Javs up 19-14. UTPB again responded for a 19-19 score line midway through the second quarter. Lake hit a pair from the charity stripe, providing TAMUK a slim edge; however, UTPB sparked an eight-point run allowing them to take a 28-21 lead. The Javelinas responded with a Payne jumper and back-to-back scores by Tschritter, before a Payne triple sent the teams into the locker room with a 30-30 tie.
Â
UTPB scored eight straight at the start of the half before a three-pointer by Pena halted their run. Shortly after, a bucket by Ray and a triple courtesy of Payne brought the Javelinas within a score. The teams traded points for the remainder of the quarter, as they headed into the fourth with the Javs trailing 45-42.
Â
A three-pointer by Tschritter helped the Javelinas tie things at 51 before four Rivers free throws, and two from Ohiaeri propelled the Javelinas to a 59-23 edge. The Javelinas closed the contest on a seven-point surge with another Tschritter triple and a Rivers layup confirming a 65-55 TAMUK victory.Â
Â
The Javelinas return to Kingsville, Texas, for a matchup with West Texas A&M on Thursday, Dec. 8, at 5:30 p.m., ahead of a 1 p.m. tip on Saturday, Dec. 10 against Lubbock Christian.Â
