Javelinas garner victory, best Grizzlies 63-41

Sophomore guard Mia Rivers was sensational, dropping 15 points, nine rebounds, and six assists

KINGSVILLE, Texas- The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team took down Adams State 63-41 at the Steinke Physical Education Center, holding the nation's top shooting team to 25% from the field in nonconference action on Wednesday.

"I really liked our energy from the get-go," said coach Michael Madrid. "I thought that our players were really focused and really locked in, Especially defensively; we did a good job mixing what we were doing defensively … from an offensive standpoint, we executed pretty well, and obviously, when you're hitting shots, things go well for you."

The Javelinas (3-1, 0-0 LSC) shot the lights out of the gym, besting Adams State (4-2, 0-0 RMAC) while knocking down 47.1% of their shots and hitting nine three-pointers in their first home victory of the 2022-23 campaign.

Sophomore Mia Rivers was phenomenal, scoring 15 points, collecting nine rebounds, and dishing out six assists. She also played a critical role defensively, blocking a shot and swiping two steals.

Classmate Jayde Tschritter matched Rivers' point total, hitting five triples while snagging five boards. Senior Brianna Pena joined the pair in the double-digit points club, logging 10. Meanwhile, junior Georgia Ohiaeri hauled in 10 rebounds, and Shelby Ray was solid as well, dropping nine points and eight boards en route to the victory,

ASC got out to a 6-5 lead early in the first quarter before a Thsritter triple kick-started the offense and sparked a sensational 16-3 run that saw Pena, Rivers, and Ray all log multiple buckets before closing out the quarter with a sophomore Veyda Lake bucket and a 21-9 Blue and Gold lead.

Riahanna Davis opened up the second stanza with a three-pointer for the Grizzlies that Tshritter quickly answered, draining one of her own. ASC hit another triple halfway through the frame. Still, the Javelinas surged, with sophomore Annelise Dominguez and Ohiaeri knocking down jumpers from beyond the arc, while Lake, Rivers, and Pena all sunk shots as TAMUK closed out the half on a 12-2 tear.

Up 38-17, as the second half began, the Javelinas picked up right where they left off with consecutive triples by Tshritter and Rivers delivering a 25-point lead. The teams then traded buckets, each scoring 11 in the fourth quarter, but the damage was already done as the Javs cruised to a 63-41 victory.

The Javelinas will be back in action at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 1, as they kick off Lone Star Conference play with a matchup on the road against Angelo State before visiting UT Permian Basin on Saturday, Dec. 3, with tipoff set for 1 p.m.
