Javelinas host Mavericks, Mountaineers for nonconference matchups

TAMUK tips off against Colorado Mesa Friday at 7 p.m., ahead of a 6 p.m. start time for Saturday’s matchup with Western Colorado.

KINGSVILLE, Texas- The Texas A&M-Kingsville men's basketball team is set to host Colorado Mesa on Javelina Administration Appreciation Night in the Steinke Physical Education Center on Friday with tipoff set for 7 p.m., ahead of a 6 p.m. start Saturday against Western Colorado. Additionally, the Javelinas will be hosting a canned food drive with fans who donate a nonperishable food item receiving free admission into this weekend's contests. 
 
The Javelinas (2-0, 0-0 LSC) started the season hot, picking up wins over South Dakota Mines and Chadron State, while senior guard Creighton Avery was issued Lone Star Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors after averaging 13 PPG with 5.5 RPG and three steals. 
 
TAMUK first toppled the Hardrockers 75-42, as guard C.J. Smith dropped 15 points, before claiming an 82-76 overtime victory against the Eagles. Newcomer Isaiah Payne led the way scoring 22 points and grabbing a pair of boards, while forward Will Chayer recorded seven rebounds, and forward Kavon Booker shot an efficient 50% from the field for 12 points and snagged six rebounds in the process. 
 
The Mavericks (2-0, 0-0 RMAC) last met the Javelinas in the first round of the 2021 NCAA South Central Regional Tournament, and CMU got the better of TAMUK, claiming a 69-55 victory that ended the Hogs season. 
 
The Mavericks have won their first two contests besting St. Edwards 81-64, before routing DBU 68-56 at Brownson Arena in Grand Junction. Trevor Baskin has been CMU's top scorer thus far, averaging 20 PPG and knocking down shots at a 72.7% clip. Baskin has also excelled defensively, logging four blocks and pulling down 13 boards across the first two games. Additionally, Mac Riniker was named RMAC Defensive Player of the Week after totaling eight steals, two blocks, and eight rebounds across the victories. 
 
The Mountaineers (0-0, 0-0 RMAC) haven't tipped off officially as they begin their season Friday against Texas A&M International but have looked strong in exhibition games against NCAA Division I programs Utah Valley and Weber State. 
 
Avery Remabo was the leading scorer against UVU, scoring 17 with two rebounds in a 91-64 defeat, while teammate Gino Corridori collected 11 rebounds. Three reached double-digit points in a loss to Weber State out of the Big Sky Conference, with Kevin Jimenez, Robel Desta, and Kade Juelfs surpassing 10 points and Jimenez dropping six assists.
