Javelinas top Eagles 80-63 in season opener

TAMUK topples CSC in the inaugural contest of the 2022-23 season, as freshman Shelby Ray piled up 24 points, eight rebounds, and five blocks in her collegiate debut

CHADRON, Neb.- The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team began their season with a bang toppling the Chadron State Eagles 80-63, at the Chicoine Events Center, thanks in large part to the efforts of freshman Shelby Ray, who, in her collegiate debut, piled up 24 points, eight rebounds, and five blocks.

The Javelinas (1-0, 0-0 LSC) bested the Eagles (0-1, 0-0 RMAC) with a remarkable second-half surge and a handful of stellar performances.

In addition to the success of Ray, sophomore Mia Rivers and senior Brianna Pena each logged double-digit points, with Rivers scoring 19 and Pena 17. Additionally, Rivers collected seven boards, six assists, and three steals, while Pena recorded six rebounds. Sophomore Janessa Payne efficiently shot 3-4 from beyond the arc, contributing to the team's 46.2% clip from deep.

TAMUK used a 9-2 run and three Ray triples to go up 17-13 late in the first quarter, but CSC trimmed the deficit in half before the period's conclusion for an 18-6 score line heading into the second stanza.

After trading layups to start the frame, the Eagles knotted things at 22, but Payne wasted no time nailing a triple to put her team back in front. Shortly after, junior Georgia Ohiaeri knocked down a pair from the Charity stripe delivering a 27-22 Blue and Gold edge. CSC pulled back within two prior to a sophomore Jayde Tshritter three-pointer that allowed the Javs to keep the opposition at arm's length before heading into the locker room with a 40-34 edge.

The Javelinas came out of the locker room on a mission, collecting the first eight points of the half, with Pena, Ray, and Rivers all recording buckets. CSC couldn't find the bottom of the net until the 5:52 mark in the third quarter, for a 48-36 score line favoring TAMUK. Following the make, the Javs embarked on another six-point spurt as Ray eclipsed the 20-point threshold before cruising into the fourth quarter up 59-48.

TAMUK outscored the opposition 21-15 in the final frame, as Rivers added eight points to her total, while Pena, Tschritter, and Payne all sunk shots from deep for an 80-63 final score and a victory in the season opener.

The Javelinas are back in action on Saturday, as they face Black Hills State in Spearfish, S.D, with tipoff slated for 7 p.m. against the Yellowjackets.
