Efficient shooting propels Javs past Yellowjackets 71-65

TAMUK improves to 2-0 early in the 2022-23 campaign

SPEARFISH, S.D.- On Saturday, the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team shot the lights out of the gym, using a 51.9% shooting performance to best Black Hills State 71-65 at the Donald E. Young Sports & Fitness Center in nonconference action.
 
The Javelinas (2-0, 0-0 LSC) took down the Yellowjackets (1-1, 0-0 RMAC), with junior Georgia Ohiaeri leading the squad with 20 points and eight rebounds, while senior Brianna Pena scored 15, with five assists. Additionally, freshman Shelby Ray and junior Veyda Lake each contributed eight to the team's point total, while sophomores Janessa Payne and Mia Rivers added seven apiece.
 
The Javelinas wasted no time lighting up the scoreboard as back-to-back triples by Pena and sophomore Jayde Tschritter combined with an Ohiaeri layup-up for an 8-0 Blue and Gold lead. TAMUK's edge would grow to nine with an Ohiaeri triple later in the period, but the Yellowjackets battled back, using an 11-4 run to take a 19-18 lead at the end of the first. 
 
A Payne three-pointer got the second stanza going as the teams traded buckets before consecutive makes by Pena sparked a 6-0 Javelina spurt, resulting in a 29-24 lead. BHSU again answered with a surge of their own, knotting the contest at 29, ahead of a 34-33 halftime score favoring the Javs.
 
The Yellowjackets exited the locker room and immediately embarked on a 10-2 run that delivered a 43-36 score line. TAMUK, however, recovered using nine Ohiaeri points to take a 51-48 lead with 0:45 left in the third quarter.
 
Up 51-50 entering the final frame, back-to-back makes by Rivers resulted in a five-point edge, but a Yellowjacket triple and two Kalla Bertram free throws tied the contest at 55. The squads traded blows with the score remaining tied until an Ohiaeri layup provided the spark the Javelinas needed, with eight unanswered points propelling the Javs to a 70-62 edge, ahead of a 71-65 score at the final buzzer,
 
The Javelinas will be in the Steinke Physical Education Center for the first time in the 2022-23 season on Saturday, Nov. 12, with tipoff set for 4 p.m. against Western Colorado.
