Javelinas take on Western New Mexico on Hispanic Heritage Night

KINGSVILLE, Texas – The newly ranked No. 22 Texas A&M-Kingsville (5-0, LSC 3-0) returns to action for a home Lone Star Conference matchup against Western New Mexico (3-2, LSC 2-1) on Saturday, October 8 at 7 p.m. for Hispanic Heritage Night.

The Javelinas return to Javelina Stadium after spending last week in Washington taking on the Simon Fraser Red Leafs in a game that ended in a 35-7 victory for the Javs.

The win has propelled TAMUK to 5-0 on the season and pushed the team into the AFCA Division II Coaches' Poll being ranked No. 22, the first time the program has been ranked since 2012.

"There's a lot of excitement right now," said head coach Mike Salinas. "Our focus though is on tuning out all the noise, and focusing on a good Western New Mexico team and being 1-0 this week."

The Hogs will certainly have their hands full on defense as Mustang quarterback Devin Larsen is first in the LSC for passing touchdowns along with leading in several other statistical categories.

LAST TIME OUT
Salinas' team came away with a sound 35-7 over Simon Fraser last week.
The Javelinas started fast scoring on their first three drives of the game to open an early 21-0 lead.

Quarterback Jacob Cavazos led the way offensively for the Javelinas throwing for 199 yards and three touchdowns while also scoring one on the ground in the win.

Cavazos posted a QBR of 135.2, going 20-33 through the air for 199 yards and recording three TDs through the air as well.

The Hog defense got after it in the Pacific Northwest forcing three total turnovers with an interception by Cory McMahan while the team recovered two SFU fumbles.

SCOUTING THE MUSTANGS
The Mustangs make the long trip from Silver City, NM after a thrilling 30-27 overtime victory over Midwestern State last weekend.

Offensively, the Mustangs are led by quarterback Devin Larsen who leads the LSC in passing touchdowns, yards, yards per game, and points responsible for. However, Larsen is ninth in the conference in passing efficiency.

Larsen is surrounded by plenty of talent at wide receiver, including Charles Byers and Allen Ortiz who are tied in the LSC for receiving touchdowns.

Defensively, the Mustangs have terrorized opposing quarterbacks, with 18 sacks so far this season good for second-best in the league.

WNMU averages 7.6 penalties per game with an average of 73.8 yards per game of penalties.

WNMU has yet to win a game in Javelina Stadium in three previous attempts.
