Hogs visit Cardinals to open 2021 campaign

Kickoff set for 6 p.m. CT at Wilkes Memorial Stadium in University Center, Mich.

The Matchup
  • The 2021 season is official underway this week as the Javelinas visit Saginaw Valley State on September 4 at Harvey Randall Wilks Memorial Stadium in University Center, Mich.
  • Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. CT (7 p.m. ET) and will broadcast live at SVSUCardinals.com
  • The game will have a live audio broadcast on the Javelina Sports Network sponsored by Mendoza's Pharmacy
  • Saturday's contest marks the return of normalcy as this will be the first game for either team
  • The Javelinas took the first-ever matchup between the program on September 20, 1980, by a score of 52-0, while the Cardinals took the rematch in 2019 at 35-14
  • The Javelinas played two games in the spring of 2021 while the Cardinals haven't taken to the field since the conclusion of the 2019 season

Scouting the Cardinals
  • SVSU enters its second full season with Ryan Brady at the helm of the program
  • Brady went 5-6 in his first season as head coach and spent the prior eight seasons as an assistant coach at Ferris State, including the 2018 NCAA Division II runner-up season
  • The Cardinals were selected to finish fourth in the 2021 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Preseason Football Poll
  • The 2019 season featured 12 players bringing home GLIAC postseason honors, including Heath Williams being named the GLIAC Defensive Lineman of the Year and First Team All-GLIAC
  • Chad Gailliard, Nate McCrary and Ryan Conklin also took home honors on the first team
  • Of the four First Team selections, Chad Gailliard is the lone returner for Saginaw Valley State
  • Gailliard finished the 2019 season with 48 catches for 853 yards and 10 touchdowns
  • Conklin threw for 2379 yards on a 57.7 completion rate, along with 19 touchdowns
  • McCrary anchored the ground game with 1060 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns
  • Williams led the defense with five sacks, most on the team, and added 38 total tackles, 10 solo
  • David Still led the defensive group with 89 total tackles, 29 solo, 7.5 for loss and 2.5 sacks along with three interceptions

2021 Look Ahead
  • Texas A&M-Kingsville opens up the 2021 campaign on the road with a visit to University Center, Mich., for a matchup against Saginaw Valley State on September 4
  • The home opener at Pepsi Field at Javelina Stadium is set for September 11 against Western Oregon
  • The LSC opener against Eastern New Mexico is set for September 18 in Portales, N.M.
  • The first LSC home game of the season for the Hogs will take place on September 25 against 2017 NCAA Champion A&M-Commerce for the annual Chennault Cup meeting between the teams
  • The Javelinas face Lincoln (Calif.) on October 16 at home for the first-ever meeting between the two programs
  • The season finale takes place on November 13 against Angelo State in Kingsville, while the Division II Playoffs begin the following week

2020 Rewind
  • Due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, which had the NCAA cancel all Spring 2020 and Fall 2020 Championships, the Javelinas played two games in the Spring of 2021
  • TAMUK faced Midwestern State on the road on March 6 and fell by a score of 45-34 to the Mustangs
  • Zadock Dinklemann threw for 316 yards and two scores in the loss, with one touchdown apiece to Ryan Martinez and Kevin Reynolds
  • The three remaining touchdowns scored came on the ground, one each from Amonte Bowen, Roger Hagan and Craig Clemons
  • The home contest against UT Permian Basin on March 20 as the Falcons won the contest at 17-2
  • The lone score from the Hogs came on a safety in the fourth quarter after Sergi Landeros was sacked for a six-yard loss early in the frame by David Kypuros

All About Head Coach Mike Salinas
  • Mike Salinas was named the 12th head coach and 11th full-time head coach of Javelina football on December 20, 2019
  • Salinas played for the Javelinas from 1995 to 1999 and had his first collegiate coaching position as an assistant coach for TAMUK in 2002 as a member of Richard Cundiff's staff
  • The Hogs compiled a record of 30-7 with Salinas on staff, including back-to-back West Region Championships and two straight appearances in the NCAA Division II Semifinals in 2002 and 2003
  • Previous stops in the collegiate ranks for Salinas include West Texas A&M (2005-06) as the Buffs advanced to the NCAA playoffs for the first time in program history
  • Further stops include Sam Houston State (2006-08) and Hardin-Simmons (2011) before he was responsible for the opening of Robert Vela HS in 2012 in Edinburg, Texas

Offensive Measures
  • The Javelinas return all 11 starters from the COVID-shortened Spring 2021 season on the offensive side of the ball
  • Zadock Dinklemann started both games under center for the Hogs
  • Dinklemann threw for 316 yards and two touchdowns in the loss to the Mustangs
  • Dinklemann added another 74 yards in the loss to the Falcons to close out the spring season
  • Amonte Bowen led the ground game with 82 yards and one touchdown on 19 attempts
  • Christian Anderson was right behind him with 67 yards on 19 rushes
  • Craig Clemons and Roger Hagan are the other two rushers responsible for the remaining touchdowns scored on the ground with one apiece
  • Kevin Reynolds and Ryan Martinez caught the two touchdown passes from Dinklemann in the spring season
  • Reynolds finished with 93 receiving yards on six catches, while Martinez added 77 yards on 10 grabs
  • Ty Chisum was the other Javelina with over 70 receiving yards as he finished with 79 on six catches

Defense Mechanisms
  • 10 starters on defense will be back for the Fall 2021 campaign
  • Isaiah Jacobs led the defense with 14 tackles in the two games, eight solo and one for loss
  • Korey Louis, Brian Miller and Jakari Landry all finished in double digit tackles between the two games at 13, 12, and 10, respectively
  • Miller added a team-high three tackles for loss along with two QB hurries
  • Two of Miller's TFLs went in as sacks for a combined 22 yards lost
  • Louis also added two QB hurries to go with one forced fumble and a fumble recovery
  • Jacobs intercepted one pass between the games, while Derrion Warner snagged the other
  • Jacobs added a forced fumble while Tevita Mounga picked up a loose ball
  • Landry and Xavier Henderson both added a half-sack on the two games
  • David Kypuros and James Perez both posted a sack of their own
  • Kypuros' sack directly led to the safety in the loss to UTPB
