KINGSVILLE, Texas – After back-to-back weekends against some of the toughest competition their schedule has to offer, the Texas A&M-Kingsville beach volleyball team will make the trip to Nacogdoches, Texas for the Dual and Pairs Tournament at Stephen F. Austin, where, on Friday, they'll play the Southeastern Louisiana Lions at 3 p.m. and the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks at 5 p.m before taking part in a pairs tournament on Saturday starting at 8 a.m.
Despite dropping five of their last seven matches, the Javelinas still own a winning record at 6-5. One of the team's hottest tandems entering the season's fifth week is the team of Roxanne Morris (Goliad, Texas) and Olivia Nicholson (North Platte, Neb.) in the No. 1 flight. On March 26th, Morris and Nicholson scored two come-from-behind victories, first over Louisiana-Monroe, then at the expense of SFA. They also nabbed a two-set victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on March 10th that helped jumpstart a Javelina comeback from down 2-0.
Another pair that's coming off back-to-back victories is that of freshmen Emily North (Red Oak, Texas) and Rylie Anderson (Justin, Texas). Together they've gone 5-3 in 2021 and they're the only Javelina tandem that captured wins in both of their team's matchups against Louisiana-Monroe. They also teamed up for a win over SFA on Feb. 27th.
This will be the fourth time the Javs and the 'Jacks have met during the current year and the Javelinas are attempting to continue a streak of four consecutive victories over SFA that began in 2020. The Lumberjacks nearly broke that streak when they last faced the Javelinas, but dropped a pair of three-set matches that were decided by two points. A win on Friday would be their first since Feb. 27th.
SLU started their season by dropping eight-in-a-row, but they'll enter the weekend riding the momentum of a three-game win streak. This second-year program began that streak with a win over the Park University Pirates on March 20th, which represented the first win in program history. Their tilt on Saturday will represent their second match against the Javelinas, who defeated them in their first-ever match one season ago.
