KINGSVILLE, Texas – After dropping the day's first two flights, the Texas A&M-Kingsville beach volleyball team came roaring back to win the final three and log a come-from-behind, 3-2 victory over the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders on Wednesday afternoon at the Javelina Beach Volleyball Courts in Kingsville, Texas.
This triumph boosts TAMUK's record to 5-3 and they finish their home schedule undefeated at 5-0.
The Islanders won the fourth flight in straight sets and took the No. 5 and exhibition No. 6 matches in three to jump ahead by a pair before the top three tandems took the court.
The first step in this comeback was taken by juniors Macy Berg (San Antonio, Texas) and Tenley Housler (Bulverde, Texas) in the third flight. They captured the first set 21-17, then broke a 14-14 tie in the second with three straight points and rode that momentum to a 21-18 final.
Senior Olivia Nicholson (North Platte, Neb.) and junior Roxanne Morris (Goliad, Texas) won the first game in flight No. 1 but found themselves trailing in the second, 18-15. From there, Morris and Nicholson rattled off six straight points lock up the first match, 21-16, 21-18 and even the score.
The final piece of the puzzle was the second flight, where seniors Debra Rogers (Tulsa, Okla.) and Shelby Williams (New Braunfels, Texas) dropped the first frame, but dominated the second to send the contest to a decisive third set. Rogers and Williams raced out a 9-3 lead, then thwarted an attempt by the Islanders to erase that lead, winning 19-21, 21-14, 15-12.
The Javelinas will take some time off before their next road trip takes them to Fort Worth, Texas, where they'll play three times in two days, starting on March 19th against TCU.
