KINGSVILLE, Texas - Following a season-opening series win in Lone Star Conference action, the Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball program returns to Nolan Ryan Field this weekend for three league games against UAFS.
Game one is set for Friday, February 26, with first pitch at 6 p.m. CT, followed by a doubleheader on Saturday, February 27, with first pitch at 1 p.m. CT.
The Javelinas opened the year with two wins in three contests against Texas A&M International last week after having to wait for three weeks to take to the diamond after COVID protocols and weather moved the first handful of games around.
The Dustdevils took game one at 12-6 despite senior
Seth Spinn (Holland, Texas) collecting three hits at the plate, including a home run, and three RBI, while four other Javelinas ended with two hits.
Game two when in favor of the Blue and Gold as junior
Giancarlo Servin (Edinburg, Texas) skied two home runs as the Hogs got another from senior
Austin De Leon (Frisco, Texas) in the 13-0 rout. Servin finished with six RBI in the win, most RBI for a Javelina since the 2018 LSC Tournament when Dallas Stefano tallied nine in a 21-20 barnburner against Tarleton.
Redshirt junior
Amado Almanzar (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) picked up the win in the shutout as he went five scoreless innings on the hill with six punchouts.
The series finale saw the Javelinas down 5-3 in the top of the eighth before Servin ripped a three-run blast to left to give the Hogs the lead for good, turning in a 2-1 record on the weekend.
Servin finished the weekend with a .400 average with four hits, matched by De Leon and bested only by Spinn who hit .583 in three games. Servin finished with nine RBI in the series, followed by Spinn with seven and De Leon with three.
Sophomore
Matthew Sesler (Harlingen, Texas) was the other Hog to pick up a win on the pitching staff as he was credited with the decision from Monday's contest. He currently sports a flawless ERA in 2.1 innings pitched with only two hits allowed in three appearances.
The Lions own a 2-4 record having only played in two series so far in 2021. They took a game against Central Missouri at the Houston Winter Invitational before dropping the final two games to Lubbock Christian and St. Mary's.
UAFS returned home the following week for a three-game set against LCU, but dropped two of three to the Chaps.
Hunter Church, Nolan Riley and Brooks Sunny lead the way at the plate as all three are hitting over .350 in the early goings of the season. Church paces the group with a .400 clip, followed by Riley at .368 and Sunny at .357. As a team, UAFS is hitting .220 while opponents are hitting .328.
The pitching rotation includes Nico Sharp with a 2-0 record and 1.42 ERA in 6.1 innings pitched as he has made three relief appearances and struck out six. Both Brayden Johnson and Logan Grant have picked up two starts but Johnson sits with an 0-2 record and 16.62 ERA with three strikeouts, while Grant features a 7.88 ERA.
