Javelinas close out regular season with home matchup against Angelo State

Kickoff set for 7 p.m. CT at Pepsi Field at Javelina Stadium for Senior Day and Military Appreciation

The Matchup    
  • The Javelinas close out the regular season at home against Angelo State on Saturday, November 11, in a Lone Star Conference matchup
  • Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. CT at Pepsi Field at Javelina Stadium as the contest is Senior Day in Kingsville and part of Military Appreciation Day
  • The game will broadcast live on the Mendoza's Pharmacy Javelina Sports Network and will be syndicated on KDF-TV Channel 47.2 with Mark Inserra on the call
  • Saturday will be the the 54th matchup between the teams, with the Javelinas owning a 29-20 lead in the series after four wins were vacated between the 1996-99 seasons
  • The Rams have won seven straight games in the series, most recently a 44-7 win in Kingsville during the 2019 season
  • The Javelinas last won in the 2021 season to cap a five-game winning streak, 34-21, at home
Scouting the Rams    
  • Angelo State is 8-2 on the year with a 4-2 record in Lone Star play
  • The Rams have won four straight games, including wins over UT Permian Basin (34-14), Simon Fraser (51-10), Eastern New Mexico (59-7) and A&M-Commerce (30-3)
  • The two losses suffered by ASU came courtesy of Midwestern State (Sept 18 - 35-17) and West Texas A&M (Oct 9 - 31-15)
  • Nathaniel Omayebu leads the ground game with 961 yards on 155 carries for eight touchdowns
  • Zach Bronkhorst is right behind with seven rushing touchdowns, while C.J. Odom has four
  • Bronkhorst owns 1540 passing yards, 10 touchdowns and four interceptions across 120 completions at a 56.1 clip
  • Kellen Pachot has been the primary target with 39 catches for 654 yards and four scores
  • Hunter Kyle leads the defense with 70 tackles, including seven for loss, one interception and six qb hurries
  • Daron Allman owns the most tackles for loss with 13 along with six sacks and three forced fumbles
Last Time Out    
  • The Javelinas picked up their third win in four games with a 29-22 road decision over UT Permian Basin
  • Gilbert Garza booted five field goals and two PATs for 17 kicking points, connecting on two 40-yard-plus field goals, including a new season-high of 47 in the fourth quarter
  • Wade Freeman found Ty Chisum for the lone passing touchdown, while Ryan Martinez ran the ball in from 11 yards out for the only rushing score from the Hogs
  • Jacob Clarkson collected four sacks and five tackles for loss, along with two forced fumbles, to lead the defensive effort
Records Are Made To Be Broken    
  • Gilbert Garza set a new program record with 17 kicking points in the 29-22  road win over UT Permian Basin on November 6, snapping the old record of 16 set by Walter Rule on November 2, 1985, and tied the record of five field goals made in the same game by Rule
  • Garza connected on field goals from 40, 32, 27, 32 and 47 yards out, with the 47-yard try going in as a new season-long
  • Garza was rewarded for his efforts with the LSC and D2Football.com Special Teams Players of the Week
Force To Be Reckoned With    
  • Jacob Clarkson's four sacks in the win over UT Permian Basin on November 6 fell one shy of the program record held by NFL Hall of Famer John Randle set back in 1988
  • The four sacks from Clarkson are the most by a Javelina since Alex Kuyinu picked up four in a 21-17 win over Tarleton on October 22, 2016
  • The five tackles for loss are also the most by a Javelina since Caleb Valentine finished with five in the 37-34 win over Western New Mexico on October 27, 2018
The First Of Many    
  • The 24-10 win over Western Oregon on September 11 was the first win for head coach Mike Salinas in his tenure as the Hogs' lead man
  • The 36-10 win over Eastern New Mexico on September 18 was the first league win for Salinas
  • Salinas took over the program in December 2019 as the 12th head coach and 11th full-time head coach of Javelina Football
Grind It Out    
  • The Javelinas compiled 214 yards on the ground as a team in the 24-10 win over Western Oregon, most since October 19, 2019, when the program finished with 237 rushing yards
  • The 2019 season also featured 302 rushing yards against Sul Ross State on September 14
  • TAMUK picked up another 348 yards rushing in a 51-21 win over Lincoln (Calif.) on October 16
Getting Stingy    
  • The Javelina defense allowed only 58 rushing yards against Eastern New Mexico on September 18
  • It is the fourth time in the five games since Mike Salinas took over that the defense held its opponents to fewer than 70 rushing yards in the game, including the two games in the spring of 2021
  • The Javelina defense didn't allow more than 100 yards on the ground in any of the four contests since Salinas took over the program in December 2019
  • The 124 total yards of offense allowed against ENMU is also the fewest allowed against a Division II opponent since 2017 when the program held West Texas A&M to 187 total yards in a 37-9 win on October 7
  • The 86 yards rushing allowed against UT Permian Basin on November 6 was the fifth time this year the defense held its opponent to fewer that 100 yards, joining Western New Mexico (80 yds - Oct 23) Saginaw Valley State (90 yds - Sept 4), Western Oregon (67 yds - Sept 11), and ENMU on the year
I'm Not Over You Just Yet    
  • The Javelina defense recorded three takeaways in the first two contests of 2021 and added another three forced turnovers against Lincoln (Calif.) on October 16, Western New Mexico on October 23 and UT Permian Basin on November 6
  • TAMUK picked up a fumble and intercepted two passes against Saginaw Valley State on September 4, added two fumbles and one interception in the win over Western Oregon on September 11, got two more interceptions and a fumble during the win over LU, matched the next week against WNMU, and finished with two fumbles and one interception against UTPB
  • TAMUK had three games in 2019 with at least three takeaways
The First Time Since...    
  • The 36-10 win over Eastern New Mexico was the first win to start conference play for the Javelinas since September 8, 2012, when the program defeated No. 9 Abilene Christian 16-13
  • Shane Johnson's 101 rushing yards in the 51-21 win over Lincoln (Calif.) on October 16 was the most by a quarterback since Trey Mitchell finished with 154 on October 18, 2014 in a 57-31 loss to Angelo State
  • The 348 rushing yards as a team in the win over LU was the most by the Javelinas since November 7, 2015, when the team ran for 328 in a 43-25 win over Tarleton
