Hogs resume LSC schedule with road trip to Western New Mexico

Kickoff set for 1 p.m. CT at Ben Altamirano Field in Silver City, N.M.

The Matchup    
  • The Javelinas hit the road once again as they resume the Lone Star Conference schedule against Western New Mexico on Saturday, October 23, in Silver City, N.M.
  • Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. CT at Ben Altamirano Field and will broadcast live on the LSC Digital Network
  • A live audio broadcast will also carry on the Mendoza's Pharmacy Javelina Sports Network with Mark Inserra on the call
  • Saturday marks the sixth matchup between the programs, with TAMUK owning a 4-1 series lead
  • The Hogs won the last meeting on November 2, 2019, also in Silver City, by a score of 44-30
  • WNMU's lone win in the series came on November 4, 2017 at 28-13
  • The Javelinas won the first meeting on October 16, 1976, by a score of 63-2
Scouting the Mustangs    
  • WNMU is reeling following it's sixth straight loss after beginning the season with a 35-17 win over Adams State
  • The Mustangs dropped contests to Western Colorado, West Texas A&M, UT Permian Basin, Angelo State, Eastern New Mexico and A&M-Commerce, with opponents scoring at least 40 points in five of those contests
  • A&M-C shut out WNMU, 58-0, last week in Commerce, Texas
  • Bryce Coleman leads the ground game with 279 yards and three touchdowns
  • James Hoben and Oly Ta'ase both have a rushing touchdown to round out the running back corps
  • Devin Larsen has taken the majority of snaps under center for WNMU, with 1359 yards and six scores to go with seven interceptions
  • His primary target has been Allen Ortiz with 14 catches for 303 yards and a score, followed by Josh Powell with 40 grabs for 232 yards
  • Danny Walther is the only Mustang with multiple receiving touchdowns at two
  • Kaleb Gutierrez leads the defense with 48 tackles, while Tylen Coleman owns 7.5 sacks
Last Time Out     The First Of Many    
  • The 24-10 win over Western Oregon on September 11 was the first win for head coach Mike Salinas in his tenure as the Hogs' lead man
  • The 36-10 win over Eastern New Mexico on September 18 was the first league win for Salinas
  • Salinas took over the program in December 2019 as the 12th head coach and 11th full-time head coach of Javelina Football
Grind It Out    
  • The Javelinas compiled 214 yards on the ground as a team in the 24-10 win over Western Oregon, most since October 19, 2019, when the program finished with 237 rushing yards
  • The 2019 season also featured 302 rushing yards against Sul Ross State on September 14
  • TAMUK picked up another 348 yards rushing in a 51-21 win over Lincoln (Calif.) on October 16
Getting Stingy    
  • The Javelina defense allowed only 58 rushing yards against Eastern New Mexico on September 18
  • It is the fourth time in the five games since Mike Salinas took over that the defense held its opponents to fewer than 70 rushing yards in the game, including the two games in the spring of 2021
  • The Javelina defense didn't allow more than 100 yards on the ground in any of the four contests since Salinas took over the program in December 2019
  • The 124 total yards of offense allowed against ENMU is also the fewest allowed against a Division II opponent since 2017 when the program held West Texas A&M to 187 total yards in a 37-9 win on October 7
I'm Not Over You Just Yet    
  • The Javelina defense recorded three takeaways in the first two contests of 2021 and added another game with three forced turnovers against Lincoln (Calif.) on October 16
  • TAMUK picked up a fumble and intercepted two passes against Saginaw Valley State on September 4
  • The Hogs added two fumbles and one interception in the win over Western Oregon on September 11
  • Two more interceptions and a fumble came during the win over LU
  • TAMUK had three games in 2019 with at least three takeaways
The First Time Since...    
  • The 24-10 win over Western Oregon snapped a four-game losing streak as the Javelinas last defeated the Wolves in the NAIA Semifinals on November 29, 1975
  • The win over WOU was also the first win at home over a Division II foe since November 10, 2018, when the Hogs defeated UT Permian Basin 24-21 in the season finale
  • The 36-10 win over Eastern New Mexico was the first win to start conference play for the Javelinas since September 8, 2012, when the program defeated No. 9 Abilene Christian 16-13
  • The Javelinas blocked a punt and recovered it for a touchdown in the 30-13 loss to Midwestern State on October 9
  • Marco Noriega had the block and initial recovery while Darian Mayberry capped the touchdown
  • The last time the Javelinas blocked a punt and recovered it for a touchdown was in a 30-14 loss on the road to Angelo State on September 15, 2018
  • Keshon Rowe had the initial block while Jacob Armstrong ended up on the ball in the endzone
  • Amos Coleman blocked a PAT against Midwestern State in the second half, first time since the 2018 season when Justin Loften blocked a PAT at home against Midwestern State
  • Shane Johnson's 101 rushing yards in the 51-21 win over Lincoln (Calif.) on October 16 was the most by a quarterback since Trey Mitchell finished with 154 on October 18, 2014 in a 57-31 loss to Angelo State
  • The 348 rushing yards as a team in the win over LU was the most by the Javelinas since November 7, 2015, when the team ran for 328 in a 43-25 win over Tarleton
