Hogs ready for three-game set with Aggies

Sunday doubleheader slated for 1 p.m. CT start time in Lawton, Okla.

THE MATCHUP    
• After much delay, the Javelina baseball team will finally take to the diamond on Sunday, February 9, for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. at McCord Field against Cameron
• Both games of the doubleheader are scheduled for nine innings
• Game three of the series is set for Monday, February 10, at 1 p.m.
• TAMUK enters the game with a 3-0 record overall and in conference play after sweeping the opening-weekend series against Oklahoma Christian last week at Nolan Ryan Field
• CU squared off with St. Mary's in the opening weekend and fell in all three games to start 0-3 under first-year head coach Kyle Williams
• Williams was promoted to head coach of the Aggie baseball program after spending one season as the team's assistant coach
• Game one against the Rattlers went against the Aggies' favor at 5-0 with Brody Curry taking the loss
• Games two and three both featured a 12-2 score that saw St. Mary's come out on top after seven innings
• Cooper Edwards has been the lone bright spot in the batting lineup as he led the team with a .625 average on the weekend and a 1.417 OPS
• Edwards compiled five hits in eight at-bats along with one walk and one double
• Beau Williams and Ryan Carter are the only other two in the starting lineup hitting over .200 after three games at .250 and .222, respectively
• Despite taking the loss in game one, all five runs allowed by Curry were unearned as he struck out five and walked four
• Michael Womack took the loss in game two with four strikeouts and three walks in 3.2 innings pitched
• Kalen Haynes suffered the loss in game three with two walks and six runs allowed in 2.2 innings pitched

LAST TIME OUT    
• The Javelinas defeated Oklahoma Christian in three games at Nolan Ryan Field to open the 2020 season
• Game one featured a final score of 3-1 for the Hogs as John Mike Rodriguez got the start and took the no-decision with three strikeouts and two walks in four innings pitched
• Sesler was credited with the win as he struck out four in 2.2 innings pitched on the bump
• Austin De Leon had a hand in all three runs as he scored the games' first run on an Eagle miscue
• In the fifth inning, De Leon tripled to right center to score Aldo Buendia and came home later in the frame on a sacrifice fly for the final run
• Game two went in favor of the Hogs at 15-8 with Amado Almanzar getting the start and taking a no-decision as well with six strikeouts and three walks in 4.2 innings pitched
• Jacob Vasquez took the win with three strikeouts in 1.2 innings of work along with four walks
• De Leon, along with Seth Spinn and Steven Bonuz, all compiled two hits in the win, with Spinn adding a double and triple to go with three runs scored as Bonuz posted the first home run of 2020
• Kohl Ullman drove in four runs on the evening, one on a sacrifice fly in the third, two on a single to center in the seventh and the final on a groundout in the eighth
• Game three went 13-10 for TAMUK despite OC scoring six runs in the final two frames
• Alex Canul got the start and took the no-decision with three punchouts in four innings pitched
• Galvan took his first career win with four strikeouts in two innings
• Chase Glover, who got the save in game one, was credited with his second save
• Hayden Fails tallied three hits, two runs scored and three RBI

BUST OUT THE BATS    
• Austin De Leon came away with a .545 batting average and a 1.643 OPS following the opening weekend
• De Leon grabbed six hits in 11 at-bats, four doubles, one triple, five runs scored and two RBI in the three games along with three walks
• Steven Bonuz was next up with a .375 average on three hits in eight at-bats but added five walks for a .615 on-base percentage to go with a double and home run for a .875 slugging percentage
• Newcomer Damian Rodriguez started all three games at third base and finished with a .333 average on three hits in nine at-bats
• Giancarlo Servin started three games at first base and added a .333 average of his own to go with two doubles, five RBi and three walks for a 1.129 OPS
• Seth Spinn is the other Javelina hitting over .300 after the opening weekend as he hit .308 with four hits in 13 at-bats along with one double, one triple and five runs scored

ON THE BUMP    
• The three starting pitchers compiled a 4.85 ERA in the three games over 13 innings pitched along with 12 strikeouts and a .260 batting average
• John Mike Rodriguez owns a 2.08 ERA with three strikeouts and two walks in 4.1 innings pitched while holding opponents to a .200 batting average
• Amado Almanzar sits with a 5.79 ERA and a team-high six strikeouts in 4.2 innings pitched
• Alex Canul rounds out the trio with a 6.75 ERA and three strikeouts through four innings pitched and a .250 batting average from opponents

OUT OF THE PEN    
• The bullpen made 14 appearances from 12 different hurlers
• Chase Glover has been the closer in two games and was flawless with two strikeouts in 1.2 innings pitched and two saves
• Matthew Sesler owns one of the wins with four strikeouts in 2.2 innings pitched and no runs allowed
• Matthew Oleson struck out two in 1.1 innings pitched for his only appearance on the weekend
• Justin Lundquist-Irvin made one appearance and threw for one inning with two strikeouts and no runs allowed
• Tyler Crouch was the other Javelina to throw at least one inning as he struck out two and allowed zero runs and zero hits

STARTING BATTERY    
• Will Arnold started twice behind the plate over the weekend and was perfect in 21 chances while also throwing out one runner
• Steven Bonuz started the other game behind the play and caught six different pitchers while also compiling two hits, two RBI, two walks and two runs scored

THE SKIPPER    
• Head coach Jason Gonzales is in his 12th season at the helm of the program
• The Javelinas have reached the Lone Star Conference playoffs for 10 straight seasons following the 2019 campaign and claimed the LSC Tournament Championship in the 2013 season
• TAMUK has reached the NCAA South Central Regional in five of the 12 seasons under Gonzalez, having reached the finals twice and clinching the regional championship 2018
• The 2018 season was the first NCAA Division II College World Series appearance for the program and claimed its first win in the final site bracket with a 9-0 decision over Mercyhurst on May 29
• Gonzales is the program's all-time winningest coach after he defeated UT Permian Basin on April 23, 2017, for his 276th career win
• His 300th win came in 2018, 16-2 over Angelo State on April 6
• Gonzales is a two-time LSC Coach of the Year in 2014 and 2015, and one-time ABCA Regional Coach of the Year in 2018
LSC OUTLOOK    
• The LSC merged with the Heartland Conference this year as 14 teams will now compete in a 50-game, round-robin schedule
• The Javelinas were picked to finish fourth in the preseason poll with one first-place vote
• Angelo State was selected as the preseason favorites in the conference, followed by West Texas A&M at the second spot and Lubbock Christian rounding out the top three

RETURNERS    
• The Javelinas feature 18 returning letterwinners from the 2019 squad, including six starters, along with seven returning pitchers
• Seth Spinn is back in the lineup as the lone All-South Central Region selection as he was named to the D2CCA team following last year
• Spinn, along with Giancarlo Servin, were both First Team All-LSC selections for the Javelinas in 2019
• The other starters returning from 2019 include Steven Bonuz, Cameron Melcher, Will Arnold, Kohl Ullman, and Austin De Leon

NEWCOMERS    
• 16 newcomers grace the roster, 12 of which are coming from the junior college ranks
11 of the newcomers will take their place on the mound, either in the starting lineup or coming out of the bullpen

SETH SPINN    
• Spinn finished the 2019 season as the team's leading hitter with a .378 average on 65 hits in 172 at-bats to go with 10 doubles, three triples and four home runs for a .541 slugging percentage
• The transfer from Weatherford added 49 runs scored and 29 RBI along with 34 walks for a .481 on-base percentage
• Spinn stole a team-high 26 bases in 27 attempts

GIANCARLO SERVIN    
• Servin was second on the team with a .367 average behind 69 hits in 188 at-bats and added nine doubles, one triple, one home run and a team-high 43 RBI to his total
• Servin drew 20 walks for a .444 OBP and scored 46 runs as well while starting all 50 games
• He also added 18 stolen bases in 21 attempts

AUSTIN DE LEON    
• De Leon hit .286 in 2019 with 40 hits in 140 at-bats along with eight doubles, two triples and four home runs
• He scored 45 times throughout the year and drove in another 24 runs and added 10 stolen bases in 14 attempts
• De Leon drew 35 walks, most on the team, for a .431 OBP

KOHL ULLMAN    
• Ullman hit .236 in his junior season, one year after hitting .328 as a sophomore
• Ullman compiled 30 hits in 127 at-bats, four doubles and hit the first home run of 2019 after hitting the last home run of 2018 at the USA National Training Complex at the Division II Championship
• Ullman added 11 stolen bases and 23 walks for a .367 OBP in 2019

TYLER FLORES    
• Flores is the lone returning starter on the hill for the Javelinas as he was named the 2018 LSC Freshman of the Year and went 2-2 with 10 starts and five relief appearances in 2019
• Flores struck out 43 in 41.1 innings pitched while opponents hit .325 against him and scored 33 runs, 25 allowed, for a 5.44 ERA
• Flores went 7-1 in 2018 as a true freshman with 79 strikeouts in 65 innings pitched for a 2.91 ERA
• Flores was credited with the program's first win in the NCAA Division II Championships against Mercyhurst on May 29
