Hogs head north to tackle West Texas A&M

Javelinas fresh off four-game sweep of Lubbock Christian and No. 22 ranking in NCBWA poll

KINGSVILLE, Texas - The Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball program looks to keep the momentum rolling into Canyon, Texas, this weekend for a four-game set with West Texas A&M at Wilder Park.

Due to forecasted weather, the first game of the series has been moved up to 4 p.m. CT on Friday, February 21.

The Javelinas are fresh off a four-game sweep of Lubbock Christian at Nolan Ryan Field last week, including two wins in extra-innings and a no-hitter carried into the seventh courtesy of redshirt junior Amado Almanzar (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic). TAMUK claimed game one on a walk-off fielder's choice error in the bottom of the 10th as junior Giancarlo Servin (Edinburg, Texas) scored the winning run, while senior Seth Spinn (Holland, Texas) skied a solo-shot to straightaway centerfield in the bottom of the eighth with two outs in game two for an identical 2-1 decision.

Almanzar's no-hitter was broken up by the leadoff batter in the top of the seventh of game three, but he still finished with six strikeouts to take his first win. Game four, meanwhile, saw the Hogs battle back from a 6-5 deficit in the bottom of the seventh with three runs sparked by a single to left center from Spinn before the sweep was finalized at 8-7 shortly after.

The Javelina batting order will trot out three Hogs hitting over .300 on the year so far. Senior Austin De Leon (Frisco, Texas) leads the way with a .379 clip on 11 hits, three doubles and one triple, and owns 10 walks for a .525 on-base percentage.

Sophomore Steven Bonuz (Port Lavaca, Texas) is second on the team with a .353 average behind six hits in 17 trips to the plate, adding one double, one home run and 11 walks to his count, while Servin rounds out the trio with a .333 average behind 10 hits, three doubles, one home run and a team-high 14 RBI.

The pitching staff has featured the one-two punch of Almanzar and redshirt junior John Mike Rodriguez (Corpus Christi, Texas) on the mound to start. Rodriguez leads the starting lineup with a 1.72 ERA through 15.2 innings pitched and has sat down 16 on strikes for a 1-0 record.

Almanzar, on the other hand, owns a 2.45 ERA through 14.2 innings and a team-best 21 strikeouts as he teamed up with classmate Chase Glover (Fort Worth, Texas) to shutout the Chaps in game three where Glover picked up his team-leading third save of 2020.

The Buffs feature Izaiah Madrid and Keone Givens hitting over .400 on the year so far, with Darius Carter rounding out the trio with a .333 clip. Givens paces the group with 16 hits in 40 at-bats to settle right on the .400 mark, just behind Madrid's .406 on 13 hits in 32 trips to the plate.

Carter, tied for second on the team with Madrid with 13 hits, leads the way with 11 RBI, followed by Givens with 10.

The Buff pitching staff brings back Zach Dixon into the fold as he is currently 2-0 on the year with a 1.96 ERA in 18.1 innings on the hill. Behind him will be Mathieu Gauthier with a 1-1 record and a 3.50 ERA through 18 innings pitched, while Todd Danzeisen rounds out the trio with a 2-0 mark on a 3.57 ERA in 17.2 innings thrown.

Gauthier leads the group with 23 strikeouts, followed by Dixon with 19 and Danzeisen with 11.

Game one is set for 4 p.m. CT on Friday, February 21, at Wilder Park, while Saturday's doubleheader will get started at 4 p.m. CT. Sunday's finale is set for 1 p.m. CT to wrap up the fourth week of LSC play.
