Javelinas travel to Eastern New Mexico for first road trip of 2019

Kickoff set for 7 p.m. CT at Greyhound Stadium

The Matchup    
  • Texas A&M-Kingsville will hit the road for the first time in 2019 with a trip to Portales, N.M., to take on Eastern New Mexico on Saturday, September 28
  • Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. MT (7 p.m. CT) at Greyhound Stadium
  • The Javelinas have lost the previous two meetings between the programs as the Greyhounds took the decision in 2018 with a 31-14 decision
  • TAMUK and ENMU were tied 14-14 early in the third after Koy Detmer Jr. found Roe Posada from two yards out at the 11:09 mark of the third quarter
  • The Hounds scored 17 unanswered points through the remainder of the game as Wyatt Strand connected with Johnny Smith twice through the air

Scouting the Greyhounds    
  • Strand is back for his senior year and leads an ENMU offense ranked first in NCAA Division II with 398 rushing yards per game
  • Strand owns 271 yards on the ground along with a team-high five rushing touchdowns and has added two scores through the air alongside 206 passing yards
  • Paul Terry leads the ground game with 483 rushing yards and three touchdowns, averaging 161 yards per game
  • Zachery Fields has caught both touchdown passes from Strand and has gained 139 yards on seven grabs
  • Lamontre Huval and Charles Countee have led the defensive effort with a combined 42 tackles through three games, with 22 coming from Huval and 20 from Countee
  • Huval has the lone sack on the year, owns one of three interceptions, and leads the team with 2.0 tackles for loss
  • Vicen'te Walker has the other two interceptions
  • ENMU has recovered five fumbles through three games, with Countee falling on one of them

Last Time Out    
  • The Javelinas dropped their Lone Star Conference opener at home to Angelo State, 44-7
  • Luis Lopez had the lone score for TAMUK, courtesy of a 13-yard rush with 1:20 remaining in the third, and finished with 35 yards on the ground
  • Cade Dyal started the game under center and finished with 211 yards through the air along with two interceptions
  • Koy Detmer Jr. replaced Dyal later in the game and ended with 81 yards on seven completions and one interception
  • Jacob Clarkson led the defensive effort with one sack and an interception of his own
  • Amos Coleman III and Tre'Michael Tutt both finished with nine tackles
  • TAMUK had four sacks as a team, with Ronnie LaRue and Cody Gardner picking up one, while Sesi Salt and Jimmar Davis split the other
  • LaRue also had his first fumble recovery of the year midway through the first quarter
  • Darrian Hambrick led the receiving corps with 96 yards on five catches

Lone Star Conference in the National Rankings    
  • Three LSC teams continue to place in the AFCA and D2Football.com rankings through two weeks, with another two receiving votes in the AFCA poll
  • Tarleton remained at No. 4 in the AFCA rankings following a win over West Texas A&M and remained at No. 5 in the D2Football.com poll
  • A&M-Commerce move up to No. 11 in both polls after defeating ENMU the week prior
  • Midwestern State jumped to No. 15 in the AFCA poll, along with a hop up to No. 14 in the D2Football.com poll, after defeating UT Permian Basin at home, 14-8
  • WT continued to receive votes, despite the loss to the Texans
  • Angelo State started receiving votes once again after the win on the road at TAMUK
  • Eastern New Mexico stopped receiving votes following the loss to A&M-C

History in the Making    
  • TAMUK's 72-0 win over Sul Ross State was the first shutout for head coach Daren Wilkinson since he first took over the program ahead of the 2015 season
  • The win was also his first 70-point win at the helm of the program
  • The last shutout came in the 2010 season, a 21-0 win over A&M-Commerce on September 8
  • It was the 126th shutout in program history and the 10th of Sul Ross State
  • The Javelinas held the Lobos to a net rushing yardage of -1, the first time since 2016 TAMUK held its opponents to a net negative rushing yardage
  • Since Wilkinson joined the program, the Hogs have held their opponents to fewer than 100 yards on 14 different occasions, including thrice so far in the 2019 campaign, twice in 2018, four times in 2017, and five times in 2016

Familiar Territory    
  • The contest against Sul Ross State (Division-III) was the fourth in five seasons against an opponent outside of NCAA Division II with Daren Wilkinson at the helm of the program
  • Wilkinson currently owns a 3-1 record against non-Division-II foes, including a 1-1 mark against Incarnate Word (Division-I)
  • UIW took an 18-16 win in the 2015 meeting in San Antonio, while TAMUK returned the favor in 2016 with a 31-22 win at Javelina Stadium
  • The Hogs defeated Texas Wesleyan (NAIA) in 2018 at 52-10 in the first meeting against the Rams since 1945
  • TAMUK posted a 72-0 shutout of SRSU in the second week of 2019

Go Big or Go Home    
  • The Javelinas have 21 plays in excess of 20 yards, including two of at least 70 yards
  • Lopez's 70-yard touchdown run, along with a 79-yard kick return from Amos Coleman III, both came against Sul Ross State
  • No other big play has gone in excess of 40 yards

Driving Range    
  • TAMUK has posted 13 scoring drives so far in 2019, including two drives that lasted under a minute
  • Both drives that were under 60 seconds ended on a rushing touchdown courtesy of Lopez
  • The Hogs have had four scoring drives in excess of four minutes, all lasting at least eight plays and three of which ended on a passing touchdown
  • Two scoring drives lasted at least 10 plays, with Lopez capping off an 11-play, 62-yard drive against SVSU with a one-yard touchdown run
  • Kris Barnes ended a 10-play, 57-yard drive with a four-yard dash into the end zone during the following week against SRSU
