Hogs welcome Lobos for IBC Bank Hispanic Heritage Weekend

The Matchup
  • Texas A&M-Kingsville remains at home for the second straight week to start the season for a matchup against former longtime Lone Star Conference foe Sul Ross State
  • Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. CT and the contest will broadcast on the Javelina Sports Network sponsored by Mendoza's Pharmacy
  • The game is part of Hispanic Heritage Weekend sponsored by IBC Bank
  • This will be the 38th meeting between the schools and first meeting in 44 years
  • TAMUK last faced the Lobos on Oct. 18, 1975 and came away with a win at 50-26

Scouting the Lobos
  • SRSU lost its opener to fellow American South Conference foe No. 6/7 Hardin-Simmons on September 7 at 64-0
  • The Lobos compiled 96 total yards of offense as first-year quarterback Jorge Barrera went 9-for-19 as the signal caller for 54 yards
  • The SRSU defense forced two fumbles, both of which were recovered, and block a field goal in the loss
  • Eight different receivers were a target of Barrera's nine completions, with Matthew DeLeon pulling in the long reception at 15 yards
  • Williton Grear gathered 15 yards on the ground for SRSU on 18 attempts
  • Isaiah Jacobs finished with 12 tackles to lead the defense, including a half-tackle for loss
  • Zoland Simon finished with 1.5 tackles for loss, added five total
  • Levah Tarry and Jaylen Bussey each forced a recovered a fumble in the matchup
  • Treyton Bates was credited with the blocked kick on the second point-after attempt in the first quarter

  • The Javelinas fell short in the season opener against Saginaw Valley State
  • After a scoreless first quarter, the Cardinals struck first with 3:37 remaining in the second as Ryan Conklin connected with Chad Gailliard for 44 yards
  • Conklin added a 30-yard strike to Nysir Minney-Gratz at the 1:10 mark of the stanza to put TAMUK in a 14-0 hole at the break
  • The Hogs found their way on the board in the third quarter as Cade Dyal found Devin Milburn from 22 yards out to cut the deficit in half
  • Milburn finished with nine catches for 120 yards and a score
  • SVSU tacked on two more touchdowns in excess of 70 yards, first a 79-yard bomb from Conklin to Casey Williams with 4:23 remaining in the third and a 71-yard pick-six from Marvin White at the start of the fourth
  • Luis Lopez added a 1-yard touchdown run at the 10:30 mark of the final frame
  • Conklin added his fourth score of the evening with a 13-yard scramble to shut the door on the Javelinas with 4:33 remaining in the game
  • Dyal finished with 191 yards on 18-for-33 in the pocket, adding a score and an interception
  • Kris Barnes led the ground game with 26 yards on eight rushes, while Lopez finished with 24 yards on six attempts
  • Alec Lewis led the defense with 12 tackles, including one for loss
  • Tre'Michael Tutt added nine takcles and a team-high two tackles for loss

Lone Star Conference in the National Rankings
  • Three LSC teams continue to place in the AFCA and D2Football.com rankings after the first week, with another two receiving votes in the AFCA poll
  • Tarleton got a bump up in the AFCA poll after defeating Division-I foe Stephen F. Austin
  • A&M-Commerce moved up a spot in both polls following an 83-0 throttling of Seleccion Nuevo Leon
  • Midwestern State also defeated a D-I foe in Northeastern State and moved up in both polls to No. 16
  • Angelo State and Eastern New Mexico are both receiving votes after starting the year 1-0

Familiar Territory
  • Saturday's contest against Sul Ross State (Division-III) marks the fourth contest in five seasons with Daren Wilkinson at the helm of the program against an opponent outside of NCAA Division II
  • Wilkinson currently owns a 2-1 record against non-Division-II foes, including a 1-1 mark against Incarnate Word (Division-I)
  • UIW took an 18-16 win in the 2015 meeting in San Antonio, while TAMUK returned the favor in 2016 with a 31-22 win at Javelina Stadium
  • The Hogs defeated Texas Wesleyan (NAIA) in 2018 at 52-10 in the first meeting against the Rams since 1945

Offensive Measures
  • Dyal, along with Koy Detmer Jr., combined for 32 completions on 62 attempts in the loss to SVSU
  • The duo were picked off three times in the contest and finished with 263 yards through the air
  • 10 different receivers came away with a reception in the loss, led by Milburn's nine catches for 120 yards and one touchdown
  • Ty Chisum, back from an injury that sidelined him for the majority of the 2018 campaign, added four catches for 32 yards
  • Darrian Hambrick, a transfer from Mt. San Antonio College, added three grabs for 28 yards
  • Brent Hertel (3 rec - 28 yards) and Ryan Martinez (2 rec - 24 yards) follow up Hambrick, while Aaron Dilworth (7 rec - 18 yards) rounded out the Javelinas who finished with multiple grabs

Specialized Tools
  • Romario Perez, a native of Corpus Christi, Texas) made his collegiate debut with a perfect 2-for-2 on PATs, but missed his lone field goal attempt of 46 yards in the first quarter
  • Karch Kasper took over punting duties and finished with five punts for 201 yards, a 40.2 yard per punt average
  • Donte Ross and Amos Coleman III combined for 87 kick return yards as Ross had a long of 27 and Coleman III added a long of 34

As A Team Now
  • The Javelina defense limited SVSU to 259 yards through the air but were outgained on the ground 102 to 58
  • In total, the Cardinals forced five turnovers, including three interceptions and two fumbles
  • SVSU was held to seven punt return yards and another 56 kick return yards
