KINGSVILLE, Texas - The Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball program enters postseason play riding a four-game win streak following a Lone Star Conference series sweep of Eastern New Mexico over the weekend. The sweep cemented the Javelinas' spot as the third seed in the LSC Baseball Championship presented by Under Armour and they will face sixth-seeded Tarleton to open the postseason.
The matchup is set for Thursday, May 9, with first pitch at 7 p.m. CT at Wilder Park in Canyon, Texas.
The Hogs swept through the final weekend of play once again after taking four games from ENMU to remove the Greyhounds from the tournament. The Blue and Gold pulled off a similar feat at the end of the 2018 regular season after defeating Cameron four times to eliminate the Aggies from postseason contention.
Following the regular season, the Javelinas are hitting over .330 in the regular season among all qualified batters, with junior
Seth Spinn (Holland, Texas) leading the way with a .384 clip. Spinn owns 63 hits in 164 at bats, added 10 doubles, three triples and four home runs for a .555 slugging percentage, drew a team-high 34 walks for a .490 on-base percentage, and ended up with 26 steals to his first-year total.
Sophomore
Giancarlo Servin (Edinburg, Texas) completed his second year at Nolan Ryan Field with a .367 batting average on 66 hits in 180 at bats, added nine doubles, one triple and one home run, drve in a team-high 42 RBI, scored 46 runs, stole 17 bases and drew 20 walks.
Redshirt senior
Manny Loredo (McAllen, Texas) rounds out the trio with a .338 clip on 54 hits in 160 at bats. He posted seven doubles and four home runs to his count, drove in 33 RBI and scored 34 runs, drew 23 walks and stole eight bases while manning right field.
On the hill, junior
Zach Boyett (Robinson, Texas) leads the starting rotation with a 2.62 ERA through 58 and 1/3 innings pitched. He compiled a 6-3 record with 48 strikeouts and held opponents to a .245 clip. He will be joined by senior
Preston Plovanich (Santa Fe, Texas) who set a new Javelina career record with his 26th win following a complete-game shutout of ENMU on May 4.
Plovanich leads the team with 72 strikeouts, has held opponents to a .197 clip at the dish, and owns a 3.29 ERA through 68 and 1/3 innings pitched.
Classmate
Eric Sandoz (Austin, Texas) has taken over the primary closer role in the bullpen with a 2.57 ERA through 42 innings pitched. He has a 4-1 mark with three saves and has held opponents to a team-best .189 average with 45 strikeouts.
The Texans are reeling at the moment after dropping three of four to UT Permian Basin to close out the season. TSU has dropped five of the six series in 2019 after opening league play with a series loss to Cameron before dropping three of four to the Javelinas at Nolan Ryan Field on April 5.
Tarleton was summarily swept by West Texas A&M and Angelo State before splitting the four-game set with ENMU leading up to the season finale against UTPB.
Two Texans have managed to hit over .300 on the year with Tyler Fowler and Blake Burns leading the way. Fowler sits at .322 with 46 hits in 143 at bats, adding 10 doubles, one triple and one home run along with 22 RBI and 26 runs scored, while Burns is swinging at a .315 clip with 40 hits in 127 at bats to go with eight doubles.
Brian Archibald has been one of the few bright spots for the TSU starting rotation as he is 6-4 through 12 starts with a 3.25 ERA in 72 innings pitched. Archibald was given the hook after four innings against the Hogs back on April 5 after TAMUK posted five runs in the first inning.
Jacob Cornell has been one of many out of the bullpen for Tarleton and owns the best ERA at 3.14 through 14 and 1/3 innings pitched. He has struck out 15 on the year and held opponents to a .160 clip but has not seen the Javelina this year.
The winner of the matchup will move on to face second-seeded West Texas A&M on Friday, May 10.
