Hogs host Greyhounds for LSC finale

Friday doubleheader set for 2 p.m. start time; Saturday single game at 4 p.m.; Sunday single game at 1 p.m.

KINGSVILLE, Texas - The Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball program wraps up the regular season starting on Friday, May 3, for a four-game set against Eastern New Mexico in Lone Star Conference action.

Due to inclement weather in the forecast on Saturday morning, the series has been shifted to a doubleheader on Friday starting at 2 p.m., while a single game at 4 p.m. will take place at Nolan Ryan Field on Saturday for Senior Day. Sunday's regular-season closer remains unchanged with a 1 p.m. start time.

The Javelinas are looking to snap a six-game skid after getting swept by then-No. 1/14 Angelo State over the past weekend. The Rams ended up clinching the top seed and LSC Championship with the series win while TAMUK looks to move up to the third seed ahead of the tournament next week.

The Hogs' 25-19 record includes a 9-11 mark in league play with junior Seth Spinn (Holland, Texas) remaining atop the batting lineup with a .384 average on 58 hits in 151 at bats. His .550 slugging percentage comes off the heels of 10 doubles, three triples and three home runs after he skied two round-trippers in the series finale against ASU.

Sophomore Giancarlo Servin (Edinburg, Texas) is the other Javelina with a battling clip over the .350 mark at .359 with a team-high 60 hits in 167 at bats on the year, adding eight doubles, one triple and one home run in the process. Redshirt senior Manny Loredo (McAllen, Texas) rounds at the trio with a .342 mark at the plate off 51 hits in 149 at bats as the triumvirate spearhead the offensive look.

On the bump, senior Eric Sandoz (Austin, Texas) got his first start over the weekend but could not stem the tide that was the Ram lineup. He still owns the best ERA on the staff, however, at 2.72 with a 4-1 record and three saves along with 43 strikeouts in 39 and 2/3 innings pitched.

Junior Zach Boyett (Robinson, Texas) leads the starting rotation with a 2.98 ERA through 51 and 1/3 innings pitched along with a 5-3 record, 44 strikeouts and three shutouts. Senior Preston Plovanich (Santa Fe, Texas) is close behind at a 3.67 ERA through 61 and 1/3 innings pitched with a team-best 66 punchouts on the year.

The Greyhounds are currently 15-29 on the year with a 3-16 mark in conference play. Four starters feature a batting average over .300 with Nicholas Ankerman leading the way with a .360 clip on 49 hits in 136 at bats to go with a team-high .515 slugging percentage behind 11 doubles, two triples and two home runs.

Paul Tapia sits second with a .355 clip with 43 hits in 121 at bats, followed by Joel Paulino at a .316 mark, while Malcolm Boehm rounds out the quartet with a .305 average to go with nine doubles, three triples and two home runs.

Enrique Perez stands out at the premier hurler for ENMU with a 4.04 ERA through 55 and 2/3 innings pitched, best among qualified pitchers, and a 5-4 record in 2019. He adds a team-high 64 strikeouts but has allowed opponents to hit .308 at the plate.

Fernando Burgos and Joel Torres have also carried their part in the starting rotation with a combined 22 starts and a 6-12 record, but own ERAs of 6.92 for Burgos and 8.06 for Torres.

The Javelinas took on the Greyhounds earlier in the season in non-conference action in Portales, N.M., with TAMUK taking three of four in the series.

The Hogs grabbed game one at 16-4 behind 16 hits and a six-run first inning before taking the split in Saturday's doubleheader. ENMU took game two at 11-6 before the Javelinas returned the favor in game three with a 17-1 score.

The Greyhounds owned a 7-1 lead in game four before the Blue and Gold posted seven runs in the final two at bats, tallying five runs in the eighth and two in the ninth, to take the win.
