Hogs visit No. 1/14 Rams to close LSC road schedule

Javelinas look to avenge series loss in March to Angelo State

KINGSVILLE, Texas - Following the bye in the Lone Star Conference schedule, the Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball program returns to action on the road for a four-game league series against No. 1/14 Angelo State starting on Friday, April 26, in San Angelo, Texas.

The Javelinas  last took the field for a four-game set against UT Permian Basin starting on April 12, and after inclement weather pushed the final three games back a day, the Hogs came away with a series split after the Falcons claimed games three and four. TAMUK currently sits at 25-15 on the season with a 9-7 mark in LSC play.

Following the series, four Javelinas carry an average over the .300 mark, led by junior Seth Spinn (Holland, Texas) who has compiled a team-high .387 mark on 53 hits in 137 at bats alongside 10 doubles, three triples and one home run for a slugging percentage of .526.

Spinn also leads the team with a .494 on-base percentage with 30 walks to his name and adds 20 stolen bases in 21 attempts for the well-rounded look.

Sophomore Giancarlo Servin (Edinburg, Texas) is hot on his teammate's heels with a .375 average while starting all 40 games, posting a team-high 57 hits in 152 at bats, adding eight doubles, one triple and one home run for a .461 slugging percentage, and has drawn 17 walks to add a .459 on-base percentage.

Redshirt senior Manny Loredo (McAllen, Texas) is currently third with a .343 mark, behind 47 hits in 137 at bats, and is tied with classmate Pablo Hernandez (Havana, Cuba) in home runs with four while Hernandez owns a .304 batting clip to round out the quartet.

Junior Austin De Leon (Frisco, Texas) inched closer to the .300 plateau as he is currently swinging at a .295 rate but has matched Loredo and Hernandez with four round trippers while moving into the starting lineup as a left fielder.

A 4.29 team ERA punctuates the Hog hurlers with senior Preston Plovanich (Santa Fe, Texas) and junior Zach Boyett (Robinson, Texas) going in as the starting one-two punch on the bump for TAMUK.

Plovanich owns a 6-4 record with a 3.41 ERA through 58 innings pitched, to go with a team-best 64 punchouts, while Boyett is 5-2 with a front-of-the-pack 2.79 ERA through 48 and 1/3 innings pitched alongside 43 strikeouts.

Boyett was recently named the LSC Pitcher of the Week as he threw a complete-game shutout against UTPB with nine strikeouts, the second honor he has taken in 2019 after he grabbed the distinction on March 26 after throwing his first complete-game shutout of the season in an 8-0 win over then No. 5/3 West Texas A&M.

The Rams are tearing up the LSC at the moment with an 18-2 record in league play heading into their final series of the conference schedule against TAMUK. ASU is ranked first in the NCBWA poll and has continued its climb up the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll at No. 14.

Angelo State is currently riding a 13-game win streak through the LSC after sweeping three consecutive series against Cameron, Eastern New Mexico and Tarleton, and added a 16-10 win over St. Edward's on April 9.

Josh Elvir has emerged as the frontrunner for the LSC Player of the Year as he currently hits .466 in his redshirt junior campaign, totaling 62 hits on 133 at bats, but carries a .992 slugging percentage with 11 doubles, seven triples and 15 home runs.

Nick Seginowich is the other Ram surpassing the .400 mark as he is hitting at a .417 clip with 63 hits in 151 at bats, and adds a .775 slugging percentage with 15 doubles and 13 home runs. As a team, ASU is hitting .358 with every starter hitting over .320.

The pitching staff, by comparison, owns a 4.75 team ERA as Trent Baker leads the starting rotation with a 3.25 ERA through 63 and 2/3 innings pitched along with 55 strikeouts. Josh Barnett has been the go-to reliever out of the pen with a 1.99 ERA through 17 appearances, including five starts, and has sat down 42 batters on strikes in 31 and 2/3 innings pitched.

Game one of the series is set for 6:30 p.m. CT in San Angelo, Texas, at Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium.
