KINGSVILLE, Texas - Just three days after taking away a thrilling win in wild walk-off fashion, the Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball program will host No. 24 Angelo State for a four-game series starting on Friday, March 8, with first pitch set for 6 p.m. CT at Nolan Ryan Field.
The Javelinas took on St. Edward's earlier in the week and came away with a 15-14 win in the bottom of the ninth after battling back from a 10-0 deficit going into the bottom of the third inning. The Hogs loaded up the bases with two outs in the ninth and the winning run came home courtesy of a wild pitch from SEU to move TAMUK to 10-4 on the year.
Through 14 games, redshirt senior
Manny Loredo (McAllen, Texas) currently leads the Javelinas with a .396 average on 19 hits in 48 at bats alongside two home runs and two doubles for 15 RBI and a .563 slugging percentage.
Junior
Seth Spinn (Holland, Texas) is not far behind as he sits at a .385 clip on the year so far with a team-best 20 hits in 52 at bats, adding three doubles and seven RBI in the process, while sophomore
Giancarlo Servin (Edinburg, Texas) rounds out the trio with a .380 average behind 19 hits, two doubles, one triple and 15 RBI.
For the Blue and Gold pitching staff, junior
Zach Boyett (Robinson, Texas) and senior
Preston Plovanich (Santa Fe, Texas) are the two hurlers with an ERA under 3.00 as Boyett leads the pack with a 2.12 ERA through 17 innings pitched and Plovanich sits second with a 2.25 ERA in 24 innings on the hill.
Boyett has held opponents to a .213 average at the plate with 13 strikeouts, while Plovanich leads the team with 28 punchouts to go with a .202 opponent batting average.
The Rams improved to 15-4 on the year following a four-game sweep over LSC foe Tarleton in non-conference action. ASU also swept CSU Pueblo the week prior to extend the winning streak to eight games, just one ahead of the Javelinas' current seven-game streak.
Angelo State is currently hitting at a blistering pace at .347 as a team, with all nine projected starters hitting over .300 on the year. Josh Elvir and Lachlan Mayo both feature an average surpassing .400 as Elvir leads the group with a .431 average behind 22 hits, five doubles, one triple and seven home runs, alongside 25 RBI and 20 walks.
Mayo is not far off as well as he features a .429 averaged on 27 hits, six doubles and two home run to go with 23 RBI and 12 walks.
The ASU pitching staff has only one starter with an ERA under 3.00 as Trent Baker is at the forefront with a 2.48 ERA through 32 and 2/3 innings pitched, adding a team-high 29 strikeouts in the process. Two Ram relievers will look to keep the bats quiet in the later innings as Nick Coffman owns a 2.45 ERA in 14 and 2/3 innings pitched while Josh Barnett adds a 2.08 ERA through eight and 2/3 innings on the mound.
Friday's game one is set for a 6 p.m. CT start, while the doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m. CT on Saturday. The Sunday final will feature a first pitch time of 1 p.m. CT to wrap the weekend series.
