KINGSVILLE, Texas - The Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball program continues the road trip this weekend with a four-game set in Portales, N.M., starting on Friday, March 15, as the Javelinas will face Eastern New Mexico in a South Central Regional matchup.
The Hogs are fresh of a 16-6 win over Houston-Victoria in a midweek matchup that had several déjà vu elements on the way to the final inning. Redshirt freshman
Matthew Stary (Houston, Texas) skied a pinch-hit grand slam in the top of the eighth to spearhead the nine-run frame for the Hogs, a feat accomplished by junior
Dax McCleary (Sweeny, Texas) in the 2018 meeting of the teams in the same stadium.
On the year, redshirt senior
Manny Loredo (McAllen, Texas) and junior
Seth Spinn (Holland, Texas) are both clearing a .400 average on the year at .412 and .405, respectively. Loredo has posted 28 hits, four doubles and two home runs for a .559 slugging percentage on top of 10 walks for a .494 on-base mark.
Spinn, meanwhile, leads the team with 30 hits to go with four doubles and a pair of triples, adding 12 RBI in the process.
Sophomore
Giancarlo Servin (Edinburg, Texas) and redshirt senior
Pablo Hernandez (Havana, Cuba) are the other two Hogs hitting over .300 at .368 and .322, respectively, as Servin owns 25 hits, three doubles and a triple, while Hernandez is carrying 19 hits, two doubles and three triples.
Junior
Zach Boyett (Robinson, Texas) leads the Javelina pitching staff with a 3.00 ERA on 10 runs, seven earned, in 21 innings pitched along with 16 punchouts. He is one of three hurlers with an ERA under 3.00 as seniors
Preston Plovanich (Santa Fe, Texas) and
Eric Sandoz (Austin, Texas) hover right behind at 3.34 and 3.68, respectively.
Plovanich leads the Hogs with 36 strikeouts over 29 and 2/3 innings of work, while Sandoz recorded his third win of the year at 14-5 over No. 24 Angelo State and owns 18 strikeouts.
The Greyhounds are sitting at 8-8 on the year after dropping three of four to Tarleton on the road this past weekend. ENMU bested Cameron the week prior in three games before the fourth was cancelled to start the regional slate.
Joseph Zubia leads the Hounds with a .395 clip on 17 hits in 43 at bats, adding three doubles, one triple and a home run to his season total alongside 10 RBI. Nicholas Ankerman and Malcolm Boehm are the other two members to eclipse the .300 mark as Ankerman's 16 hits in 44 at bats give him a .364 average, while Boehm adds 18 hits in 55 at bats for a .327 mark.
Enrique Perez will be the game one starter for ENMU as his 1.57 ERA in 23 innings pitched is far and away the best mark on the staff. He owns 32 strikeouts during his time on the hill and as held opposing batters to a .224 average.
Liam Sabiston is the only other hurler with an ERA under 4.00 as his 1.08 is courtesy of 1 run in eight and 1/3 innings pitched to go with eight strikeouts. As a team, the ENMU pitching staff currently carries a 6.13 ERA.
Game one of the series is set for March 15 at the Greyhound Baseball Field, with first pitch at 2 p.m. CT.
