LAREDO, Texas – Sophomores Kristina Gutierrez (Laredo, Texas) and Madison Lake (Victoria, Texas) both landed in the top 10 for the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's golf team after 36 holes on Monday at the Jack Brown Memorial Invitational at the Max A. Mandel Municipal Golf Course in Laredo, Texas.
After one round of play Gutierrez owned a four-over 76, which placed her eighth in the 40-competitor field. She did drop a couple strokes over her second trip around the course, shooting six-over, but managed to maintain her spot in eighth. In 10 rounds of golf this season, Gutierrez has been under 80 eight times.
Lake concluded day one just two spots behind her teammate, in sole possession of 10th place. She carded a six-over 78 in round one before slipping to an 82 later in the day for a total of +16 with the final day of play set for Tuesday.
Junior Rachelle Nielson (Summerland, Canada) was responsible for the Javelinas' third score, shooting 22-over. She posted identical scores of 83 each time out and is sharing 17th with four other student-athletes.
Sophomore Abigail Willcoxon (Conroe, Texas) is tied for 28th at 27-over and freshman Sarah Turnbo (Wink, Texas) will enter Tuesday in 37th.
As a team, the Javelinas are in third place at 75-over, 12 shots ahead of Lubbock Christian and Texas A&M International who are tied for fourth. UT-Tyler owns second place at 44-over. Dallas Baptist University has run away with the tournament's top spot, with a score of -18.
The Patriots are also in possession of all of the event's top five spots on the individual leaderboard, led by Hanna Harrison at seven under. Faith De La Garza sits in second place at -5 with Ann Parmerter in third, three shots behind the leader.
