Hogs host Lions for annual Throwback Game

Kickoff set for 7 p.m. CT for Family Weekend and Navy Night

The Matchup    
  • Texas A&M-Kingsville returns to Pepsi Field at Javelina Stadium this weekend for the annual Throwback Game against No. 21/20 A&M-Commerce
  • Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. CT and will be part of Family Weekend and Navy Night at TAMUK
  • The two teams kicked off the 2018 season on August 30 on the NCAA Division II Showcase on ESPN3 with the Lions, ranked No. 1 by the AFCA, holding on to a 37-36 double-overtime victory
  • This will be the 27th meeting of the Chennault Cup, with TAMUK holding a lead at 16-10 in the series, and the 64th meeting all-time between the programs
  • A&M-C has claimed seven straight victories dating back to 2012, with the last TAMUK win coming at home on Oct. 1, 2011, at 39-21

Scouting the Lions    
  • The Lions head to Kingsville with a new coach as David Bailiff replaced Colby Carthel, who departed A&M-C for Stephen F. Austin
  • Bailiff is 80-96 all-time in his 14th season as ahead coach, with previous stints at Texas State for three seasons and Rice for 11 seasons
  • The Lions' passing game is led by Miklo Smalls, who has thrown for 718 yards on a 73.5 completion rate along with five touchdowns
  • Jeremiah Bridges and Chance Cooper on the top two targets as the duo have combined for 376 yards on 26 catches and all five touchdowns
  • Antonio Lealiiee and E.J. Thompson have split backfield duties with 102 yards on 22 carries coming from the former, while the latter owns 86 yards on 18 attempts
  • Alex Shillow leads the defensive effort with 22 tackles through three games, along with one fumble recovery
  • Neema Behbahani leads the next eight Lions who have recorded at least 10 tackles as he has tallied 16 through three contests

Last Time Out    
  • The Javelinas fell in their road opener of 2019, 48-34 to Eastern New Mexico
  • The Hogs held a 31-17 lead midway through the third quarter before the Greyhounds mounted their comeback
  • Donte Ross provided a spark on offense and special teams as he brought in eight catches for 151 yards and one touchdown, and also ran back a punt 48 yards for a score
  • Luis Lopez recorded his fourth straight game with a rushing score, finishing with 78 yards on 14 attempts
  • Darrian Hambrick added four catches for 93 yards alongside Ross in the receiving corps
  • Tre'Michael Tutt set a new program record as he led the defense with 22 tackles

Defensive Stalwart    
  • Tre'Michael Tutt's 22 tackles (12 solo) against ENMU on Sept. 28 set a new program record for most tackles in a game
  • Tutt broke the record of 21 originally set by Robert Soza against Nevada on Sept. 15, 1984, and matched by Chris Hensley against Pittsburg State on Dec. 2, 1995

Gone in a Flash    
  • Donte Ross' 48-yard punt return touchdown against ENMU on Sept. 28 was the first punt return touchdown by a Javelina in nearly 10 years
  • The last Hog to return a punt for a score was Corey Robertson on Oct. 31, 2009, against Abilene Christian
  • The last TAMUK special teams touchdown was a 100-yard kickoff return by Jordan Thomas against William Jewell on Nov. 8, 2017

Goose Egg    
  • TAMUK's 72-0 win over Sul Ross State was the first shutout for head coach Daren Wilkinson since he first took over the program ahead of the 2015 season
  • The last shutout came in the 2010 season, a 21-0 win over A&M-Commerce on Sept. 8
  • It was the 126th shutout in program history and the 10th of Sul Ross State

Lone Star Conference in the National Rankings    
  • Three LSC teams continue to place in the AFCA poll, while four are showing in the D2Football.com rankings
  • Tarleton remained at No. 4 in the AFCA poll and No. 5 in the D2Football.com rankings following a 49-7 win over UT Permian Basin
  • A&M-Commerce fell to No. 21/20 (AFCA/D2Football.com) following a loss to CSU-Pueblo
  • Midwestern State is receiving votes in the AFCA poll and ranked No. 24 by D2Football.com after falling 28-6 to Angelo State
  • ASU jumped up to No. 23 in both rankings following the win over MSU Texas
  • WT continued to receive votes after defeating Western New Mexico 

Go Big or Go Home    
  • The Javelinas have 30 plays over 20 yards, including two of at least 70 yards
  • Lopez's 70-yard touchdown run, along with a 79-yard kick return from Amos Coleman III, both came against Sul Ross State
  • A 48-yard punt return touchdown by Donte Ross and a 47-yard pass completion from Cade Dyal to Darrian Hambrick, both against ENMU, are the other plays above 40 yards

Driving Range    
  • TAMUK has posted 18 scoring drives so far in 2019, including two drives that lasted under a minute and two resulting in field goals
  • Both drives that were under 60 seconds ended on a rushing touchdown courtesy of Lopez
  • The Hogs have had five scoring drives longer than four minutes, all lasting at least eight plays, three of which ended on a passing touchdown, one ending on a rushing touchdown and one resulting in a 24-yard field goal by Romario Perez
  • Four scoring drives lasted at least 10 plays, with Lopez capping off an 11-play, 62-yard drive against SVSU with a one-yard touchdown run
  • Kris Barnes ended a 10-play, 57-yard drive with a four-yard dash into the end zone during the following week against SRSU
  • TAMUK had identical 10-play, 62-yard drives end up in field goals in the game against ENMU
  • Four of the Javelinas' five scoring drives against the Greyhounds all lasted between two and three minutes
