Javelinas resume LSC schedule on road against Mustangs

Kickoff set for 7 p.m. CT at Memorial Stadium

The Matchup    
  • The Javelinas head out on the road this weekend to resume Lone Star Conference play against Midwestern State on Saturday, October 19
  • Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. CT at Memorial Stadium in Wichita Falls, Texas
  • The Mustangs took the matchup in 2018 in Kingsville, Texas, by a score of 69-14
  • Torrey Thomas caught a seven-yard pass from Koy Detmer Jr. in the 2018 matchup, while Brandon Jones returned a fumble 41 yards for the other TAMUK score
  • MSU Texas has won the last eight meetings between the programs
  • The last time TAMUK won a game against the Mustangs was Nov. 6, 2010, at home, 27-7
  • The Hogs have won one meeting in Wichita Falls, a 29-23 victory on Oct. 4, 2003

Scouting the Mustangs    
  • MSU Texas is currently on a three-game skid after winning their first three games of 2019
  • The Mustangs defeated D-I foe Northwestern State to open the year, 33-7, and followed up with a 28-27 decision over Lindenwood and a 14-8 win over UT Permian Basin
  • MSU Texas fell to Angelo State (28-6), Eastern New Mexico (27-24) and A&M-Commerce (54-28) since then
  • Quinton Childs leads the ground game with 565 yards and four touchdowns on 103 attempts
  • Zach Purcell and Triston Williams have split duties under center, with Purcell throwing for 765 yards on a 58.7 completion rate and five touchdowns
  • Williams has thrown for 581 yards on a 48.8 completion percentage and five scores
  • Juwan Johnson, the 2018 LSC Receiver of the Year, has managed only 105 yards on eight catches for two touchdowns but has only played in three games this year
  • Xavier Land and Tyrique Edwards lead the receiving corps with a combined 660 yards on 50 catches and four touchdowns
  • Marcus Wilkerson leads the defense with 35 total tackles, followed by Tristan Shearman with 33
Last Time Out    
  • The Javelinas started strong against Western Oregon on Oct. 12, but couldn't maintain the momentum in the second half as the Wolves came away with the win
  • Donte Ross started the scoring with a three-yard touchdown run on the opening drive of the game
  • WOU knotted the score at 7-7 just over a minute later with a 15-yard touchdown run from quarterback Ty Currie
  • Currie ended with three rushing scores in the contest as he added two in the second half
  • Josh Wilson registered the other touchdown for TAMUK as he took a blocked field goal back the other way for 70 yards
  • Sesi Salt got a hand on the ball to block the 33-yard field goal attempt
  • Luis Lopez finished with 71 yards on the ground, while Ryan Martinez added 55 yards on three catches
  • Tre'Michael Tutt added a game-high 13 tackles to lead the defense, along with a forced fumble

Defensive Stalwart    
  • Tre'Michael Tutt's 22 tackles (12 solo) against ENMU on Sept. 28 set a new program record for most tackles in a game
  • Tutt broke the record of 21 originally set by Robert Soza against Nevada on Sept. 15, 1984, and matched by Chris Hensley against Pittsburg State on Dec. 2, 1995

Gone in a Flash    
  • Donte Ross' 48-yard punt return touchdown against ENMU on Sept. 28 was the first punt return touchdown by a Javelina in nearly 10 years
  • The last Hog to return a punt for a score was Corey Robertson on Oct. 31, 2009, against Abilene Christian
  • The last TAMUK special teams touchdown was a 100-yard kickoff return by Jordan Thomas against William Jewell on Nov. 8, 2017
  • Josh Wilson added the second special teams touchdown of the year with a 70-yard return following a blocked field goal against Western Oregon on Oct. 12

Goose Egg    
  • TAMUK's 72-0 win over Sul Ross State was the first shutout for head coach Daren Wilkinson since he first took over the program ahead of the 2015 season
  • The last shutout came in the 2010 season, a 21-0 win over A&M-Commerce on Sept. 8
  • It was the 126th shutout in program history and the 10th of Sul Ross State

Lone Star Conference in the National Rankings    
  • The LSC has three teams showing in the AFCA poll and D2Football.com rankings
  • Tarleton continues to hold the No.4/5 spot between the AFCA/D2Football.com versions following a 49-10 win over Eastern New Mexico
  • ENMU is holding on by a thread following the loss with one possible point in the AFCA poll
  • Angelo State is back at No. 25/23 from the AFCA/D2Football.com rankings, respectively, following a 31-14 win over Western New Mexico
  • A&M-Commerce moved up to No. 20/19 following a 54-28 thrashing of Midwestern State
  • West Texas A&M continues to receive votes in the AFCA poll after defeating UT Permian Basin 14-7 last week

Go Big or Go Home    
  • The Javelinas have 39 plays over 20 yards, including three of at least 70 yards
  • Lopez's 70-yard touchdown run, along with a 79-yard kick return from Amos Coleman III, both came against Sul Ross State on Sept. 14
  • Josh Wilson added a 70-yard blocked field goal return against Western Oregon on Oct. 12
  • A 48-yard punt return touchdown by Donte Ross and a 47-yard pass completion from Cade Dyal to Darrian Hambrick, both against ENMU, are the other plays above 40 yards

Driving Range    
  • TAMUK has posted 20 scoring drives so far in 2019, including three drives that lasted under a minute and two resulting in field goals
  • Two drives that were under 60 seconds ended on a rushing touchdown courtesy of Luis Lopez, while the other ended in a pass from Cade Dyal to Amonte Bowen
  • The Hogs have had six scoring drives longer than four minutes, all lasting at least seven plays, three of which ended on a passing touchdown, another two that ended on a rushing touchdown and the last which resulted in a 24-yard field goal by Romario Perez
  • Four scoring drives lasted at least 10 plays
  • The longest scoring drive took 4:49 off the clock against Sul Ross State on September 14 and ended with a four-yard rushing score from Amonte Bowen
