Cervantes, Brigance reach provisional marks as Javelinas compete at Ted Nelson Invitational

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Texas A&M- Kingsville Track and Field program competed at the Ted Nelson Invitational on Friday at the Gilliam Indoor Stadium on the campus of Texas A&M and came away with a new school record owner in the 3000 meter run.

8:49.97 was all it took for senior Ricky Medrano (Pearsall, Texas) to finish the 3k, and in doing so set a new school best for the Blue and Gold. The previous mark of 8:51.22 was set by former All-American Kiya Dandena at the Armory Invitational on February 2, 2011. Dandena was a qualifier for the 2016 Olympic Trials and is currently competing professionally after recently signing for the HOKA ONE ONE Northern Arizona Elite professional running club.

In the shot put, redshirt senior Richard Cervantes (Mission, Texas) took first overall claiming a gold medal and an NCAA Provisional mark in the process. On his third throw, Cervantes reached 55-4.25 (16.87m) to lock up his first place finish. Junior Lane Michna (Lorena, Texas) placed sixth in the event at a distance of 49-1.50 (14.97m).

Cervantes also achieved a provo mark in the weight throw where he strong-armed his way to a 58-6.75 (17.85m) distance and a fourth place finish.

The 800 meter run saw sophomore Ayman Zahafi (Casablanca, Morocco) fight his way to the gold as he completed the race in 1:53.91.

In the women's portion of the 800m, sophomore Larissa Sanchez Gonzalez (Querétaro, Mexico)
took eighth in 2:24.65.

Senior LaGae Brigance (Houston, Texas) secured a bronze medal finish in the high jump. She reached 5-5.75 (1.67m) on her first attempt to reach provisional status and is currently ranked 14th in all of Division II in the event.

Over in the women's weight throw, senior Racheal Somoye (Houston, Texas) placed second after a 58-3.25 (18.05m) performance, capping off the final provisional performance of the evening.
