Wilson's 18 points not enough in five point loss to Mustangs

Senior scores in double figures for third straight game

Box Score

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Angelica Wilson totaled 18 points and nine rebounds, but the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team was clipped by the Midwestern State Mustangs, 66-61, on Thursday night in Wichita Falls, Texas at the D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

For Wilson, this makes three straight games in double figures and she also tied for a game-high with nine rebounds. Emmeri Archer contributed 10 the Javelina cause.

FIRST QUARTER

The Mustangs took a 5-4 lead in the early going on a triple by Whitney Taylor and the senior added another trey 50 seconds later to put MSU up by four. Three points by Wilson brought the Javs to within one and, after two points for both sides, the score stood at 10-9.

With 2:04 to play in the quarter, Tatyana McFarland tied the game at 11 with a layup and, after one Mustang free throw, Ope Ibrahim went to the line and sank a pair for a one-point lead. Two foul shots from Jasmine Richardson put the home team back in front and Richardson added one more basket at the buzzer to put the score at 16-13.

SECOND QUARTER

Chelsea Adams's first two points of the night extended Midwestern State's lead to five and two more from Richardson pushed it to seven. One TAMUK free throw and buckets by both sides changed the score to 22-16 before another Taylor trey gave MSU a nine-point edge. Jumpers by Victoria Salinas and Wilson brought the visitors to within five, but the Mustangs added their fourth three-pointer of the game to regain the momentum and go up by eight.

The Javelinas battled back courtesy of a three-point play by Antoinette Shrepee and a Sadie Russell layup and TAMUK matched the Mustangs at 28 with another three-point play, this one coming from Russell. Kristin Rydell came back with another three-pointer for the host squad and she added another triple after two Archer free throws.

THIRD QUARTER

The first four points of the second half were scored by Wilson to knot the score at 34, but Hannah Reynolds responded with four points of her own to restore MSU to the lead. Archer then sank the first triple of the night, putting the squads just one point apart before Richardson tossed in a layup. A free throw by Mica Schneider, a jumper by Avery Queen and a jump shot by Schneider gave MSU an eight-point advantage and the Mustangs extended their run to 11-0 when Adams hit two free throws and Richardson converted another layup. Following a free throw by Ibrahim, Adams tacked on another bucket before Brynae Thompson canned one from beyond the arc and the Javs moved to within 51-41.

FOURTH QUARTER

The teams went back-and-forth twice before two-pointers by Wilson and Thompson allowed TAMUK to get within six. Archer then answered a Schneider layup with a trey and Wade Scott's team was within five.

With 4:54 on the clock, Thompson hit twice from the charity stripe, making the contest a one-possession game. Two minutes later, TAMUK's deficit was still three when Salinas connected from three-point land, drawing the Hoggies even at 59. One free throw by Adams staked the Mustangs to a slim lead, but Micheline Mercelita added to it with a layup that came with 62 seconds to play. Following two MSU free throws, Wilson's final points of the night drew the Javs to within three with 21 seconds left, but they were unable to close that gap.

The opportunity for the Javs to rebound comes on Saturday, when they'll be in Lawton, Okla., where a matchup against the Cameron Aggies awaits at 2 p.m. You can receive content for Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball, you can follow @TAMUKWBB on Twitter and Instagram, like the official Facebook page of Javelina athletics (/JavelinaSports) and subscribe to the Javelina Athletics YouTube channel.
