Box Score KINGSVILLE, Texas – Angelica Wilson crafted a double-double, Tatyana McFarland pulled in 10 rebounds and Madison Crawford dished out a season-high seven assists to lead the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team past the UT Permian Basin Falcons, 59-55, on Thursday night at the Steinke Physical Education Center in Kingsville, Texas.
For Wilson, she hit double digits in points and rebounds for the sixth time this season, totaling 10 in both statistics. McFarland contributes eight points, while Crawford also grabbed five rebounds and blocked a pair of shots.
The Javelinas shot a season-best 47.7% from the field and held their opponents to just 28.1% in that category. TAMUK also outrebounded UTPB, 46-30.
FIRST QUARTER
Kayla Bretherton opened the scoring with a layup 30 seconds in and Sadie Russell matched that score with jumper. Following two Victoria Lopez free throws, Emmeri Archer drained a three to make the score 5-4. Bretherson added another layup and Sierra LeGrande tacked on a triple. When Khali Pippins-Tryon hit two free throws, the Falcons were on a 7-0 run.
The Javelinas moved to within three thanks in part to a bucket from Shaq Debose. After a basket from the visitors upped the score to 13-8, McFarland canned two foul shots and Victoria Salinas tossed in a jumper, bringing the hosts to within one. Ope Ibrahim gave the Javs the lead with a layup, only to see Jackie Perez hit a three to put the Falcons back in front by two. Bretherton added two more for UTPB before Salinas closed out the quarter with a jumper, making the score 18-16.
SECOND QUARTER
The Javelinas quickly seized the momentum, beginning with Ibrahim tying the score with two free throws. The senior soon added a layup and, after a trey from Pippins-Tryon, Salinas returned the lead to the home team with a jump shot. The Javs then took off on a 10-0 rally to close the half, a spurt that included free throws from Brynae Thompson and a bucket from Wilson. The teams headed to the locker room with the score at 30-21.
THIRD QUARTER
Each side scored in the opening seconds of the final half before Shaq Debose pushed Kingsville's lead to 11 with a layup. Treys from Pippins-Tryon and LeGrande sandwiched around a bucket from Wilson brought the Falcons to within seven, but the Javelinas responded with consecutive scores courtesy of Archer and Salinas.
UT Permian Basin battled back with a 7-0 run capped off by a Heather Crittenden three-point play. The teams traded makes before a bucket by Wilson gave her squad a 44-39 advantage with one quarter to play.
FOURTH QUARTER
The score stayed frozen for nearly three minutes before a basket by McFarland got the scoring restarted. Bretherton proceeded to put in two free throws, but Russell had an answer in the form of her team's second triple of day. Two more Bretherton foul shots were followed by a bucket from McFarland and Antoinette Shrepee stretched the lead to 10 with a layup. That advantage extended to 12 when McFarland added two from the charity stripe. Each side tacked on a pair and the Javelinas took a 12-point lead into the final 90 seconds.
The Falcons staged a rally that began with Pippins-Tryon hitting a two-pointer and adding two foul shots. With 41 seconds to play, the junior completed a three-point play to close UTPB to within 57-52. Two TAMUK foul shots kept their opponents at bay and before a late three from LeGrande made the final margin four.
Next on the docket for TAMUK is a showdown with the No. 2 team in the country, the West Texas A&M Lady Buffs, who will be in Kingsville on Saturday for a 4 p.m. inside the SPEC.
