Box Score BURNABY, B.C. – A stout defensive performance that included nine sacks and three turnovers combined with 149 total yards and three touchdowns by
Jordan Thomas propelled the Texas A&M-Kingsville football team (1-1) to a 35-7 victory over the Simon Fraser Clan (0-2) on Saturday afternoon at Terry Fox Field in Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada.
The Javelinas outgained their hosts 426-299 and were on the plus side in turnover margin for the second consecutive week.
Quarterback
Cade Dyal completed 14-of-23 passes for 144 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions.
FIRST QUARTER
Both teams began the game by trading punts, with the Javelina defense wasting no time imposing their will on Simon Fraser's offense. Coach
David Brown II's unit collapsed the pocket to the tune of five sacks in the opening 15 minutes.
Sean Landez, Devonte Williams, Tommy Chavez and
Will Petit each took down quarterback Miles Richardson once and
DeMarcus Spurlock and
Caleb Valentine split a sack. The Clan ended quarter number one with -10 yards rushing.
Late in the period, Kingsville's offense got untracked and put together a drive that ended with the first points of the afternoon. The Hogs used their ground game to move the ball, as rushes by
Jeff Carr,
Conner Smith and
Nick Pelrean yielded four first downs. On a fourth down from the 10-yard line, coach
Daren Wilkinson sent in the field goal team, but a fake field goal fooled the Clan and Dyal hit
Stehly Reden in the end zone for a 7-0 lead.
SECOND QUARTER
Less than four minutes later, the Javelinas got the ball back at their own 37 and, for the second straight week, Pelrean broke off a long run for a touchdown. The junior took a handoff up the middle, broke a tackle, bounced outside to his left and scampered 63 yards to paydirt, matching the longest run of his career.
Julio de la Garza's extra point made the score 14-0 with 7:37 to go in the first half.
The next time Wilkinson's offense got the ball, they again found the end zone, traveling 55 yards on seven plays in 2:54. With the help of a 15-yard roughing the passer penalty, the Hogs moved to the SFU 15-yard line, where they were tasked with a fourth-and-two. Reaching into the bag of tricks, Dyal handed off to Thomas on an end around. He dashed fifteen yards and slid inside the pylon for his first TD of 2017 and a 21-0 edge.
The best scoring opportunity for the Clan came late in the first half after a short punt from the end zone gave them the ball in opposition territory at the 17 with 37 seconds left in the half. Two plays later, however, Valentine stormed into the backfield and sacked Richardson, allowing the clock to run out.
THIRD QUARTER
The Clan got on the board midway through the third when Richardson dropped back from his own nine and hit Justin Buren in stride for a 91-yard touchdown, slicing Simon Fraser's deficit to 14 points.
The Javelinas answered later in the quarter after an interception by
Kuziah Ferebee set them up in enemy territory at the 32. A run followed by a penalty put them back at the 39, but on second down, Dyal went deep to Thomas, who hauled in the pass at the five and trotted across for the TD that restored Kingsville's 21-point advantage.
The defense turned over Simon Fraser again on their next possession. An interception by
Devonte Williams gave the Hogs a first down at their own 10. After a 15-yard run by Pelrean and a short completion to Reden, Thomas got open behind the defense and Dyal connected with him for a 69-yard touchdown.
FOURTH QUARTER
The Javelina defense closed out the triumph by stopping Simon Fraser three times in over the final 15 minutes, collecting two more sacks. With less than two minutes to go, the Clan had a first and goal at the six, but an interception by
Junior Henderson ended the drive and capped off the day.
