Another Double-Double for Wilson Goes for Naught in 72-66 Defeat

Senior Puts Forth Fifth Such Performance of Season

Box Score

KINGSVILLE, Texas – The fifth double-double of the season for Angelica Wilson, as well as her second in as many games, wasn't enough for the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team, as they fell to the Midwestern State Mustangs 72-66, on Tuesday evening at the Steinke Physical Education Center in Kingsville, Texas.

The Javelinas also received a career-high 14 points from Victoria Salinas and 13 from Sadie Russell. Tatyana McFarland crashed the boards to the tune of 14 rebounds.

FIRST QUARTER

After the Mustangs got on the board first courtesy of a free throw by Jasmine Richardson, each team scored a bucket, but an 8-2 spurt by Midwestern State capped by a Whitney Taylor triple gave them an early 11-4 lead. Russell responded with a three of her own, only for Hannah Reynolds to match it, then add a layup for a nine-point edge.

A layup by Russell brought the Javs to within seven and they closed to five soon after following a trey by Brynae Thompson. Mica Schneider tossed in a triple for the 'Stangs and, after a jumper by McFarland, Schneider hit a jumper to make the score 22-14 at the end of one.

SECOND QUARTER

The visitors scored the first five points of the quarter to stretch their lead to 13, but the Javelinas soon moved to within nine following a triple by Russell and a free throw by Antionette Shrepee.

With the score at 32-22 and 4:04 to play before the half, four MSU free throws pushed the Mustang lead to 14. A layup by Salinas followed and Leanna James then proceeded to give Midwestern its largest lead of the night by canning a three. A jumper by Salinas and a trio of Javelina free throws brought TAMUK back to within 10 as the buzzer sounded.

THIRD QUARTER

Layups by McFarland and Wilson quickly sliced Midwestern State's lead to six, but a Reynolds layup and a three-pointer from Kristin Rydell, who finished with a game-high 16, made the score 44-33. A three-point play by Debose was followed by another Rydell trey and foul shots by each team kept the Mustangs up by 11. Taylor and Schneider then both hit twice from the charity stripe and, after a layup by Wilson, Taylor added two more foul shots for a 15-point edge. Wilson shaved it 13 before the quarter ended with two free throws of her own.

FOURTH QUARTER

Midwestern State restored its 15-point advantage thanks to a jumper by Rydell, but Salinas nailed one from deep to cut the lead to 12. Each side sank two free throws and added a bucket before Salinas hit another trey, making the score 61-52 with 5:55 to play. The margin was again at nine points more than three minutes later before six consecutive Javelina free throws put the Hoggies just three points behind. TAMUK could get no closer however. Four foul shots by the Mustangs stretched their advantage back to seven and they held on for the win.

After a break for the holidays, the Javelinas will be back at the SPEC to battle St. Edwards on Dec. 30th at 2 p.m. You can receive content for Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball by following @TAMUKWBB on Twitter and Instagram, liking the official Facebook page of Javelina athletics (/JavelinaSports), and subscribing to the Javelina Athletics YouTube channel.
