Hogs Going Up, On A Tuesday

The Javelinas are 4-0 in Tuesday games this season

KINGSVILLE, Texas (Men's Basketball) – Texas A&M University-Kingsville (10-7, 3-5 LSC) will host RV Angelo State University (12-4, 4-4 LSC) in its final home game this month on Tuesday, January 24 at 7:30 p.m. in the Gil E. Steinke Physical Education Center.

Live stats and stream will be available at javelinaathletics.com with Kevin Piel bringing you all of the action.

The next two games for Texas A&M-Kingsville will be against Angelo State with one game being on the home floor of each team. The Javelinas has won their last three games at the SPEC and posts an overall 8-3 record at home this season— 3-1 in Lone Star Conference play.

TAMUK averages 71.3 points per contest and shoots 41% from the field. They have one of the top defensive units in the league and are second in three-point field goal defense percentage at 28.4% (4th in Division II) and blocks per game (4.5). Opponents average just 67.7 PPG (third lowest in the league) against the Javs and are 5-0 when holding their opponents under 60 points.

Senior Duan Wright and junior Trey Sumpter provides a nice 1-2 punch for the Hogs as they both lead the team with roughly 11 PPG and five rebounds per game. Caelan Neal follows with 10.2 PPG and has been shooting well from long-distance, holding a team-best .411 clip. Although the Hogs have multiple contributors coming from the bench, Justin Jones has crept to the top after an impressive 16-point outing against Western New Mexico where he went 4-of-5 from downtown and has knocked down a three pointer in 11 consecutive games.

Angelo State will enter South Texas on a two-game winning streak but has been struggling as of late. After starting the season 10-0, the Rams went on a four-game skid against Tarleton State, A&M-Commerce, UT Permian Basin and West Texas A&M. They picked up home wins against Western New Mexico and Eastern New Mexico but are currently on a two-game losing streak on the road. The Rams have no problem scoring as they shoot a league best .388 from three-point range and their 83.9 PPG mark is fourth in the LSC. However, like the Javelinas, ASU can also defend as they lead the league with 86 total blocks thanks to their defensive anchor in Justin Hollins who leads the LSC with 31 blocks. Of their 41.7 rebound average, 31.7 of them come off of the defensive glass which not only leads the conference, but also sits second in all of Division II basketball.

The Rams have six players with scoring averages in the double-digits and are led by Quay King  who has a conference-high 21.1 PPG. Lorenzo Dillard follows with 13.9 PPG and is second in the LSC with 76 dimes. Thomas Tshikaya nearly averages a double-double with 11.1 PPG and 8.9 rebounds per game, while Prince Foster, Brandon Williams and Devonte' Pratt all score ten points per contest.

The matchup at home for the Javelinas against the Rams will be the 106th meeting between the two clubs. The Hogs trail in the all-time series matchup 51-54 and have lost the last six meetings including being knocked out of the conference tournament in the first round in back-to-back seasons. Last year, the Hogs fell 87-86 in the tournament and lost all three games by a combined 10 points. The last time Texas A&M-Kingsville defeated Angelo State at home was on February 27, 2013 where the Javs won 70-61.
